96 Trannsmission Problems

I just picked up a 1996 12 valve 2wd automatic from another forum member and the tranny is having some problems. It has 300,000 original miles on the tranny and engine. The main problem is when it shifts into OD, if you let off the gas it drops down into 3rd, then when you get on it again it usually jumps back into OD or sometimes stays in 3rd. Also, sometimes it sticks in second and you have to slow down then accelerate again to get it into 3rd. It has enough fluid but the fluid is brown. I am assuming im going to need a rebuild, but before I do, is there any sensors I can check over first?

Also, anybody have any experience with this tranny, or any thoughts?
[ eBay Motors: 47RH Cummins Diesel Extreme Towing Transmission (item 170238026000 end time Sep-07-08 10:39:41 PDT)
(can't get the link to work so here is the auction #: 170238026000)

I know its not one of the "big" diesel tranny names but i really don't feel like dropping 4 thousand or whatever on a heavy duty tranny. Im just going to crank the pump and a set of small injectors. Not doing and racing or heavy towing.
thanks

A 47RH won't work in a '96. It has a 47RE.

I would first check the throttle position sensor voltage with a digital volt meter. If it was faulty, the voltage would not be steady at a steady speed. Usually a 96-98 year model that hangs in second until you let off means that the inner lip seal in the direct drum is not sealing. The fluid will leak by and delay the shift into third. But with 300,000 miles, any thing is possible !

Any idea what the correct voltages should be?
And do you guys think it would really be worth changing the trannsmission fluid and filter?
It really doesn't smell burnt, but it does smell.... different

the correct voltage is .3 to about 1 volt with the key on engine off and throttle at idle. at Wide open it should be around 3.5.

Having the same problem with mine except its a constant 4.86. So im S.O.L. thePartsbin.com has them for about 55 bucks.

Call Fred West at F & S transmission. Tell him you got his name and number from the Cummins forum. His number is 303-995-0347. Fred knows the Dodge trannies inside and out.

He should be able to give you some advise.
