Good thing the pin didn't work for you, I've found them to be as much as 3° off.
Many others have had the same experence.
Way I do it is to remove the #1 injector and use a magnetic base dial indicator to find the top of the piston stroke, mark dampener, rotate engine 180° mark again then divide the distance between the two.
Others use the drop valve method. Find close to TDC by watching #6 valve until it's at crossover (one rocker going up, the other going down at the same time) Tighten down #1 exhaust and intake valves slowly rocking the engine back and forth slightly between tightenings. When you can't bar the engine over any more it's at right on TDC.

Assumings I look forward to getting possibly 50hp or 90hp injectors and get a 3GSK kit along with a Rack plug.this might be a good rule of thumb to remember for the things that I do have done to the truck already. Was really wondering if there was a rule of thumb of how much to move timing to. Like if you run nitrous on gassers. its like 2 degrees for every 50 shot of nitrous.. You hear some folks go to 15 degrees some 17 degrees with there injection pump..

well even a stock truck will benefit mileage and power wise from advancing timing. apparently cummins designed the ISB for around 15* advance (??) but it was turned back due to smokeyness or california emissions or something? for you id run no more that 15.5* advance.

thank you very much for the info illflem! ill have to see what i can do this weekend. but what do you mean by tightening down the valves?

Cranking them down so there is no clearance.
