Oil Change

Ok, so I changed my oil for the first time yesterday. Other than the old filter apparently being torqued on with an impact, everything went well. Until...

I went to put the drain plug back in and didn't even get it tightened up very much and the ring around the edge broke free of the screw part (sorry, don't know the official names).

Luckily, O'Reillys was open and I was able to replace it.

I guess I should have known something was wrong with it when I took it off...the flat part was bent outwards.

Next up, fuel filter.

That failure was probably caused by an old error in the owner's manual. It had the torque spec for the oil pan drain plug as 60 ft/lbs. Way too high. 25 is ok.

Just curious, why is the torque so important for a plug. It seems you could just tighten it to a point then make another half turn or so and it would be ok.

torque is always important. you might get lucky and nothing will every happen. but over torque'n a nut or bolt will cause alot of stress on that bolt or nut. causing you to break a nut or bolt later.

under torque could cause the nut to spin off especially with the pressure that build s up in crankcase. JMO

It's not really. The problem with failing drain plugs was caused by the torque spec being too high. If you are going to tighten it with a torque wrench then about 25 is ok. No need to be any tighter. I don't use a torque wrench.
