I just recently bought a 97. And now noticed when it's cold there is no gears.... No first, reverse, manuel 1st nothing, feels like there all neutral. Thought it was maybe the tc draining back but putting in neutral doesn't help any. The fluid is little dark but not burnt smelling or supper black. And once warmed up fully you can tell it shifts a little wired but doesn't slip at all! I'm hopefully gonna pull the pan this weekend to see what I can find. Any info would be apriciated! Thanks guys
With a stock transmission you can sit idling in park all day and the torque converter will not get refilled. It needs to be put into neutral to fill the tc. There is a check valve that can go bad. It is in one of the transmission lines. Some guys have removed it to eliminate the possibility of a malfunctioning valve from causing damage. It could also stick open.
When the tc is empty it can take a minute or 2 (literally) to refill the tc. Until that happens only going downhill will allow the truck to move.
It sounds like this is your only issue. Your tc empties quickly when parked.

This is your issue. I believe the check valve is up close to the radiator in the trans line. Do a search on here. It just needs cleaned out.
You can do the neutral thing until you get time to mess with it. Word has it that you cannot find a new one to replace it. I don't recommend taking it out either...as some will say on here.
Thanks guys! I'm hopefully gonna do that tomorrow! Was just trying to let a guy know if I wanted his nv4500 or not to swap in. But if I can fix the 47re cheap I'd just stay with that. I'll let you know how the fluid and filter change goes!
once warm? How long does it take if you leave it in gear before it feels like it can move. Could be plugged filter, could be pump, pump bushing. High mileage on trans, or you don't know.
Start with the service, then you'll at least know more of what is going on.
I'm watching the kid right now so hopefully in a couple hours I'll get on it. And if I leave it in gear.......maybe 5 mins? Seems to depend on the colder the longer it's gotta sit. It's got 250k and the guy I brought it from said he didn't know if it had been replaced or not before him
It should not take more than 1-2 minutes to refill the tc. I agree with changing the filter and fluid. However, at 250k if the transmission has not been redone it is probably time for a rebuild. If it is just a normal rebuild it will cost around $700 in parts including a tc. On the other hand if you build it right (better tc and more nice to have goodies) it will hurt the wallet.
√ # 10518. Fits 518 / 618 / 500 / 46RE / 47RE transmissions 1989 to early 2003. This Fairbanks TransAction kit fits all Dodge RWD overdrive transmissions through early 2003. The rapid fill manual valve allows converter charge when transmission is in park. This TransAction kit will service both gas and diesel motors. (NOT FOR 48RE TRANSMISSIONS) Cost $64.00
There may be another option that allows a replacement valve body part (like a shift kit but different) to hold the torque converter fluid in. I may be wrong here and can not remember where I saw it. The part above may be what I am thinking of and it dose not do this as far as I can tell.
Dropped the pan and there was minimal shavings on the magnet and no particles in the pan. So I swapped filters and refilled it and this morning she shifted right into gear! So the filter must have been plugged! But now the next thing is it starts in second gear then down shifts then runs threw the gears like normal.....and guesses on that?
That filter must have been bad!!! The worrisome question remains. Was the filter clogged up with transmission parts that wore out (clutches etc) or was it the burned fluid that was the cause.
NO LOW GEAR (MOVES IN 2ND OR 3RD GEAR ONLY)
1. Governor Circuit Electrical Fault. 1. Test with DRB® scan tool (OBD2 scanner should work...free scan at advance auto) and repair as required.
2. Valve Body Malfunction. 2. Remove, clean and inspect. Look for sticking 1-2 shift valve, 2-3 shift valve, governor plug or broken springs.
3. Front Servo Piston c0cked in Bore. 3. Inspect servo and repair as required.
4. Front Band Linkage Malfunction 4. Inspect linkage and look for bind in linkage.
Taking off in the wrong gear could cause damage. Fix this before it is a real expensive problem.
The there was no gunk hangin off the filter, but the clutch media can be pretty small. And there isnt any codes. Pulled it with my snap on solus ultra. I looked at all the visual things I could see with the pan off. I didn't see the servos twisted or a broken spring. But wouldn't a bad shift valve throw a code?
I could be wrong but I do not think so. These transmissions are pretty simple. There are a couple of solenoids and that is about it. I know a similar problem has come up here before and after the OP talked to Garmons and got a new spring they found the transmission worked correctly. The original spring broke in half.
How do you know there are no codes?? Are you judging by the check engine light? There can be codes that don't trip the light.
Starting in second gear is, most of the time, the gov pressure sensor and/or the soliniod. They are on the valve boby, inside the trans pan.
I prefer to do pressure checks before I just change out parts.
I checked with my snap on solus ultra! And I watched the gears change as I drop today. It says it starts in first but after you step it down you feel it shift to first then to second again. Feel like that at least...and by 30 mph it's already in 4th gear. And the usual 47mph it drops into o/d and like a rock too! Is that normal to shift to 4th that fast? And when cruising to a stop it won't down shift till prolly 25 or so

If you are giving it a good amount of throttle the transmission will kick into the next lower gear. That may explain your drop back into 1st.
Somewhere around 30 is where my trucks goes into overdrive.
With o/d locked out I feel the tc lockup in 3rd at about 30 mph. Once I release the o/d switch at about 30 mph it goes into 4th gear almost immediately.
At 47 mph is where my torque converter locks up. It feels like another gear but is not. You just feel like it because you went from a 65% efficient tc to just about 100% efficient tc clutch locked up.
When I drop to 45 lockup remains. At 44 mph tc lockup disengages.
When I drop into second gear it drops almost immediately into 2nd at any reasonable speed (55 or less).
Without having a tc lockup switch installed the tc unlocks almost every time I slightly let off the throttle. This is normal and a bit irritating at times. With a tc lockup switch installed once it locks up it stays locked up until you unlock it manually or stall out. You can see how to do that here. Be aware that locked shifts can cause expensive transmission damage. Think before and after you lock up the tc manually. http://www.tstproducts.com/Torque Converter Lockup Switch.pdf
When I go from 2nd gear to 1st slowing to a stop it almost always refuses to go into 1st gear until the truck slows down to 15 mph. A couple of times it was slightly faster but I could not repeat that on purpose.
It feels like that from a stop! Not while cruising
