i just recently completed my fummins build and about 3 days ago i noticed when i started the truck for the first time of the day it was making a wierd hollow metallic sounding noise, almost like marbles.. i can pin point the sound nor can i feel anything on the valve covers, injector lines, injectors, pump valves no where.. i have not checked valve clearances since i put motor in truck its got 1000 miles on it right now.. should i be concerned with that at all yet??
i also noticed that after i lowered my rpms down to 750 that the truck will not start unless i depress throttle pedal slightly...any dieas?? when i had the truck idling at about 850 it started without the throttle pedal assistance..
also when i had the motor built it came without a fuel plate or and afc foot.. since then i have put both in. a 100 fuel plate slid all the way back, and the afc slid all the way forward, this thing smokes like a damn frieght train.. it also seems like my turbos are taking a long time to light.. and when they do start to spin up its not the high pitched whistle that im used to hearing its more like a howl..i havent really gotten in the throttle to much because i am waiting on gaugesyes i know i should have installed them from get go but my bank account is severely hurting after this build and the wife isnt to thrilled about my spending more money!!
thanks in advance for any help on these matters.. here are a few videos from this morning when i started it up.. cant see anything but you can hear what im talking about..
The noise is not repeatable. It is not a constant issue. Its timing varies. To me that rules out a bad fuel pump or rod. I would suggest you look at your flex plate. It is possible one of its bolts is loose or it is cracked. If not that look for anything around the truck that is loose and could make a rattle. To me it sounds more like a tin rattle but I am not precisely sure what a flex plate misbehaving sounds like.

fly wheel is a brand new unit from south bend..so i hope thats not it.. yeah its a wierd sound for sure and i cant pin point it.. wierd thing is that it gets less noticable or goes away with temp..
I would also look at your exhaust. It may be striking something. You may even have an exhaust clamp bolt hitting the frame. Since you just installed the engine and transmission looking at the transmission and flex plates bolts is a reasonable idea when you think of possible loose items that could make a knocking noise.
I crawled around under it and noticed my fan wobbling..its not.hitting anything and the pulley itself is not moving but you can grab the a fan blades and move fan..the nut is tight...and then fan will wiggle while running..I couldn't hear anything towards rear of engine its def something in front..
Sledneck it almost sounds like the pulley when I was installing it..like the pinging noise the belt pulley made..I'll have to take belt off and check all pulleys...
Country hick Lord I hope my flywheel and clutch isn't loose..that has actually already happen with this set up due to bolts being to long..when that thing comes loose its an unmistakable sound...and when I crawled under it I didn't hear anything coming from the bell housing..so I think or hope I'm good there..
Anyone got any ideas on the turbos and so much smoke..I was told I should be able to clean up those injectors and delivery valves no problem..though I don't know what cam I have I should have the tools to have a clean running truck right..just needs time tuning I hope..
One thing i noticed with mine was the belt was off by like one rib maybe two on the ac compressor, so i center the belt back on the pulley and now the noise is significantly quieter . I just picked up a belt without ac to throw on it and see whats happens. If you figure it out let me know.
Well today on the way to work my tach stopped working so I puller over to check my pickup sensor (Destroked tach) and my belt was rubbing up against block and had a big strip cut out hanging off the steering stabilizer..it cut my tach signal wires too... guessi need to tuck those away a little better..I'm not sure what the hell happen or what could cause it..everything under there is still tight none of the pulleys are loose or wobbly..the only thing I can think of is maybe the alternator is not just right...I'm using an auto world adapter to mount my 6.0 alternator.:confused013:
turns out it was my ac compressor making the noise..
anyways i have another wierd question.. my truck will not start without giving it throttle unless i set the throttle to 800-850 minimum.. i have it set at 750 now and i have to give her some accelerator pedal to get her to fire up.. is there anything i can do to keep my low idle but have her fire up without giving it the accelerator pedal??
im still trying to tune the damn AFC and i have all my fuel pretty much backed out as far as i can get it to make this thing stop smoking so much.. could that be it?? as is it will start at the higher idle.. ideas???
