hey all, i bought my first diesel this past summer, 95 12 auto, done smoke screw, turbo ring, star wheel, custom 4" downpipe to 5" miter cut single stack. threw a boost guage in it. now it has been getting pretty cold here (down to 29 f) at night. i was pulling my truck into the shop yesterday to change wheel bearings/ fix a fuel leak. it was nowhere near warmed up. now i usually get a good amount of white smoke upon startup, but i was a little concerned as i started it in the shop to check my fuel line repairs, and i noticed a slight haze of grey almost blue smoke. it could have been very thin white smoke but i cant say for sure. it was cold, grid heaters were kicking on.. the truck doesnt use a bit of oil, is this something i should be concerned about? if i recall correctly after its warmed up theres no smoke at all. thanks for the input guys
2. Its an old 12V. They'll haze and smoke if you look at them wrong.
Seeing as how you said there's no abnormal oil consumption, I would start with these things:
Do a Valve Adjustment, chances are, they are not within specs anymore.
Check your timing. It will slip after alot of miles, and while your at it, go ahead and bump it up to 16 degrees. Your truck will thank you.
If those two things dont clear it up, move on to the Injectors. You can either have them cleaned and pop tested, or you can just buy a brand new set, your call.
Your truck should be smoke free and running like a top after that. Good luck.

Your stock timing is shown on the data plate that is on the side of the gear case housing. A lot of people throw out a timing mark. 16 seems to be popular. Wherever you set it depends on YOUR driving style and YOUR engine. If most of your dirving is going fast down the highway, 16 or more might be the correct setting. If most of your miles are in the city, 14.5 could work. Most of my miles are highway towing at 1800-1900 rpm. After trying several different settings 15 is where I settled. Best mileage and best acceleration from a stop. Get a set of tools and see what works best for you.
edit; When you do have kdp issues the results are very expensive. The cost of tabbing it is a drop in the bucket.
Just as everyone else said, just what 12 valves do in the cold.
