getting ready to pull the trigger
Getting ready to pull the trigger on a 97 12v auto. 100,000 miles. Very clean truck inside and out, drives well. Anything I should be lookin out for engine and tranny wise for any potential problems. Going to get the tranny worked on asap, whats the recomendation with these autos...just want a reliable auto tranny, planning on mild fuel upgrades and eventually a full blown toy about 2 yrs down the road. Any help appreciated!

if you plan on having a fun truck, get ready to pull about 6k out of your pocket for a tranny. I priced getting mine done to hold 500hp, and Goerend bros trannys are about 6500.00! Mines still stock. Its still holding! Of course my truck doesnt have 500 hp.....yet!!!

just put 3k in parts alone for my tranny, but when we pulled it all apart the clutch pack were all good as were the servos and bands. but the overdrive spring was broken. talk to goerend or someone and if your trans doesnt slip now, just put in a converter, shift kit and a valve body and that should hold around 450-500. atleast thats what they told me. but yea after friends help and labor on the trans rebuild (local trans specialty buddy redid mine) i ended up putting out 3800$ for the trans. made a world of difference too. if youre looking for speed make sure you do a lockup switch too. and get that dowel pin done!

hahah my long time mechanic since my first car turned out to be a diesel specialist. who knew?! his name is Ron Pistone and he's located in Downingtown, PA. the shop name (which i just found out) is Dr. Diesel. used to work on Detroits, Mac, Cummins, Clatterpillars... now he works on anything that goes turns wheels. mine took around 3 weeks to remove, take apart, rebuild, and reinstall but thats because i had a 2 inch crack in my transfercase that had to be welded and while it was at the welders a storm knocked out his MIG. otherwise it would have only taken like 8-9 days or so. and that was him waiting for me to come down after school and work to help him out.
