starting problems

i have a 1994 dodge 2500. here recently, i have been having trouble getting it to start. it will crank fine. when i am turning it over to get it to start, if i give it some fuel it will fire up but as soon as i let off the starter it dies again. its like the fuel is being cut off as soon as the starter cuts off. i know i havent given much to go on but i am not sure how exactly to describe this beyond what i said on here. if anyone has any advice on what this is and how to fix it, i would greatly appreciate it. thanks and take care

Is the fuel shut-off solenoid working properly? Turn the key to run, but don't start it and pull the lever up (or bumping the starter should pull it up) and make sure it holds in the up position with the key in the run position

So if you don't give it throttle it will just crank, and crank, but never fire? And when you give it a little throttle it fires right away? will it stay running if you keep giving it throttle?

Any white smoke when it runs?
Ever replaced the overflow valve or lift pump? or checked fuel pressure?

Also a quick pump of the lift pump primer bulb might help diagnose the problem. Before you try to start it push the primer bulb in a few times (3-5 times). If this helps it might be an overflow/lift pump problem

it will fire but it stops cranking when it fires up. right after it fires up though, it dies again.. it shoots out white smoke when i do give it some fuel. if i keep cranking it over and giving it fuel, it may start up if im lucky

Sounds like either your timing is out of whack, or you need a new overflow valve. Does it continue to white smoke until you get quite a bit of fuel through it, or the motor starts to warm up?

It sounds like the fuel solenoid is pulling up ok, but falling as soon as the key is let go of. Start it and leave the key on. Check the fuel solenoid to see if you can pull it up. If you can then something is wrong in the ignition on circuit or the fuel solenoid. Check fuse #9. Read this for info on how to test the fuel solenoid: Joe G's fuel system writeup
