0 plate or no plate. Took plate out and truck is still weak
I bought a 97 cummins the other day. I had one before I put a 0 plate in and it had ungodly power (5 speed). I bought this auto, took the plate all the way out, drilled the airbox and added a k&n. I also plugged the wastegate. It runs ok but does not have near the power as my old one. This truck has stock exhaust, my old one had a bullet muffler replacing the stock and deleted cat. Is the exhaust holding this back or should I put a plate back in? When you nail it it smokes black down low then seems to turn light grey or white. It seems if you are on the highway in overdrive at obout 70 and nail it it revs realy slow and don't pull real hard. I have not changed the fuel filter yet could that be a problem? Please help. I do not have a boost or egt guage.

well, to start your 97 auto has a less powerful pump on it than your old 97 manual. From the factory these were the pump numbers: 1994-1995 auto= 160 hp 1994-1995 manual= 175 hp 1996-1998 auto= 180 hp 1996-1998 manual= 215 hp Your 5 speed started out with 35 more hp from the factory, and generally the manuals will take a bit more power and respond better due to less transmission heat and slippage.

First of all ... GET GAUGES!! Second, Replace all filters, fluids, etc. I NEVER recommend pulling the fuel plate, it is just not a good thing to do. The arm needs to travel on something. Is the tranny slipping? ... What gears are in the truck? Intake & Exhaust are going to make the truck breath better ... more air in/more air out is always a good thing.

What year was the 5 speed? The 96-98 215 trucks also had larger injectors (considered close to 50hp over the others) The 215 engines also have a retard notch in the plunger head, so after about 17* of rack travel the power suffers a little (4* timing retard @21mm) so the 215's make power sooner and don't benefit from AFC mods as well. Also stock rack plug limits travel so even w/ a #0 FF the governor arm will bottom on the plug before it hits the plate, so removing the plate won't make any difference. Add a 2095 plug (with AFC mods) and your pump will be better than a 215 (flat top/no retard) Hows your AFC setup? And get gauges and replace the filters. It will make a big difference if its dirty

pump
What exactly do you mean how is my afc set up? I just removed the cover, took the plate out and put the cover back on. I did slide the cover all the way forward. I turned the star wheel all the way toward the motor.Thats everything I did to the pump. Is it true or bs about some dowl pin breaking killing the pump without a plate? My 5 speed was a 98 so I guess thats why it ran so much better. Shawn |

False, As I've been told by many. Although it is possible to over rotate the barrels, or get binding but both are not very likely. If your AFC isn't modified and without a 2095 plug you wouldn't even be touching a #0 FF anyways. I also don't like to take chances with questionable things (like running head bolts) so I'd put in a plate and never question it. DDP sells a nice budget plate kit if you want to cut one up and save your stocker There is a lot more to tuning an AFC then cranking the starwheel all the way. Whats the preboost screw set at? Stock spring? Stock washers/no other internal mods? Basically i wanted to know what pressure it took to unseat the AFC arm and when it allowed full travel, but if all you did was crank the wheel it really doesn't apply |

This one: ![]() It allows for an additional 2mm of rack travel that the stock plug does not. And a new one only cost $15 Bosch 2095 P7100 Rack Plug 94-98 Dodge 12 Valve Cummins Diesel You can also shim the stock plug. AFC mods and an aggressive plate are needed for this to be affective though Here are some directions for how to install one 2095 Rack Plug Installation - Competition Diesel.Com - Bringing The BEST Together |
