Winter starting procedure, in the summer?
My truck developed a tough start this last week...it will crank several times before it starts? touch the throttle a tad like in the cold winter months and it starts and runs fine? been doing this for the last week or so, doesnt bother me but i was wondering what would cause this? battery and alternator checked out at the napa so im thinking fuel area...any thoughts?

^^^^ Check idle RPMs. If idle is even the slightest bit too low you can crank on that sucker all day before it starts (unless of course you give it some throttle!)

That should be good - if you can trust the tach. Factory Service Manual says not to. You might want to bump it up a little and see if things change. Personally I like giving my rigs a little throttle when starting vs. a higher idle.

I think the manual for my 96 says 750 RPM at operating temperarture, sitting still (brake on), in drive, with the AC on. Like illflem wrote, the manual says you can't trust the tach. I usually don't adjust the idle in the winter so I got used to a little pressure on the foot feed to crank it. If it bothers you try bumping up the idle a little.

i do it everytime. and im nearly positive its a low idle because if i turn the wheel near lock and put it in reverse it WILL stall everytime. for me its a sacrifice. more chance of reverse stall but less "cruise control" effect. my tach reads somewhere around 600-700 but will drop to about 400 or even slightly less, the first start of the day. |
