Governor Adjustment

I wish to increase the governor speed on a 1995 cummins diesel engine that is a boat application. If you have any ideas that would be great.

Thanks

The best way would be to install a 3GSK or even a 4GSK with the 60lb exhaust springs.

If it's a true marine engine, it could have the zexel pump and not the bosch...so be careful when taking advice....let us know which pump it is and we'll steer ya in the right direction.

The engine was out of a 1995 dodge truck, and I have put a water pump on it for a heat exchanger

What is a 3GSK or a 4GSK?

Isn't it possible to just tweak the governor?

a gsk is a governor spring kit.
a 3k gsk will let the pump fuel untill about 3200 rpms
a 4k gsk will allow the pump to fuel untill about 3800-4000 rpms.
This is the most reliable way to increase the rpms that a cummins will put out.

you can buy a governor spring kit (GSK), or do your own. I assume the 2300 defuel start is affecting your top end? On the side of the pump right below and under the run solenoid, you will find a large hex plug...22mm...under here is access to the spring packs, 2 of them 180* apart. With a venier caliper, measure the stud protrusion above the center nut which is cut with a screwdriver type head. Once you have this measurement (prolly between .035 and .050) remove the nut. It has a lock built into it that ratchets the nut every 1/4 turn. Either click it down two more clicks, or 180 degrees, or remove it and place a washer that measures no more than 1 inch in diameter with a 1/2" hole in the center, and about .050 thick uunder the ratainer that is under the nut. If the washer method is chosen, re-install the nut to the same depth it was before you removed it and try it out. If you choose the "tighten the nut" method, you'll find it may not start without a little throttle, as the idle spring is now preventing some idle rack travel due to the increased spring tension. They both have their pro's and cons, oh and the con for the washer method is that the fuel curve is much quicker and it will not hold a no-load throttle setting above 1200 rpm without racing up to 1800. With a load you will not notice this though, but out of gear you will. A store bought 3K GSK still involves removing the nut and retainer, but replaces the three inner springs with new ones, and retains the outer idle spring.

I figured I'd better mention after doing one spring pack mod, to roll the engine 180* and do the other one....there are two sets and they both should be done as evenly as possible within a few thousands of stud.
