I remember reading somewhere that you could tell by the VIN number if a 98 is a 24v or a 12 valve... anyone know how? I think I remember it being a D somwhere in the VIN like the 6th or 8th diget...

look at the engine bay and you should be able to distinctively tell if its a 12 or 24 valve by the injection pump and valve cover

He may not be at the truck to do that though and the VIN method would be nice for that. Especially since the majority of the owners probably don't have a clue about the differences nor do they care.

The VIN number is really useful if you're looking for a particular truck and looking through 100's of ads trying to find THE one.
Of course one look under the hood the p-pump and the individual valvecovers of the 12v are a dead giveaway...
One other way to tell the door badges say "Cummins Turbo Diesel" on a 12v and "Cummins 24v Turbo Diesel" on the 24v with some practice you can spot the difference from afar. I look for trucks with the black plastic mirrors going down the road and try to see if they are 12 or 24 valvers by that method just for fun.

C in the 8th of an '02 means HO (24v of course). '01 HO would be a 7.
D for a '97 or '98 is definately a 12 valver.
