Took me another 2 hours but i finally got timed to 17*, stupid pump was jumping around when I tried to pull the gear , but I finally set it. WOW , what a difference .....no smoke, even at 3000rpm. Gonna have to start moving the afc and plate back up till i get it tuned in. Thanks guys.

I'm glad it turned out to be timing. I just got a crackhead deal on a '96 2500, and it does EXACTLY what yours did-smokes blue and sputters when you rev it in neutral. It's sluggish to respond to the throttle-the complete opposite of my dually, which has the timing at 16 degrees. My buddy and I should have time soon to advance it on the '96.

The timing pin is not the most accurate way of finding TDC, If I had the time , I would have tightened down one of the valves and rotated the engine to find true TDC. Maybe mytiming is still out by a degree and it was at 10.5* before and at 16* now . I can hold it at 3000rpm for 5 seconds in neutral with no signs of smoke now. Have not road tested it yet....getting insurance today.

Just got her back from the alignment shop (replaced the front end last weekend as well) and took it out on the highway.......1st gear ok power, from the on she a little low...very low...but i need to slide the afc ahead where it belongs, i'm sure thats where the power problem is....will try it tonight after the temperture drops a little outside. Still have to change tires, install factory camper overloads and rear swaybar kit, replace head liner and carpet, replace rear bumper, replace batteries and cables ,install 12000lb winch into the "big ugly black front bumper", rewire the hitch and wire for the camper...should have it done by tomorrow night if nobody stops by for a beer.

If I remember correctly, the torque for the pump gear nut was increased to 145lbs/ft. At the original setting the gear would slip and the timing would be retarded again.

Slid the afc ahaed all the way and cranked the star a few turns ....that made quite a difference, a liitle black smoke at the start then great acceleration...I thing there's still a lot mor hidden in there, but I'm going to test the mileage on monday(going fishin)....now time to get the boat ready........I need a beer!!!!

Just wired in a compass/temp/review mirror. New headliner , carpet and weatherstripping today; loaded the camper and checked the wiring. Beers cold and I'm ready to go fishing...Let you know in 5 days how the first voyage of the truck was.
