Replacing fuel lines, should I bypass the stock fuel filter?

I'm all about filter change intervals and making it easy on myself in the long run.
The fuel suction line is leaking at the tank so I'm going to replace all lines, and the draw straw with a vulcan straw.
What is the best route to go? I'm thinking of bypassing the stock fuel filter all together and mounting a fuel filter/water separator down on the frame like an airdog but minus the pump.
What about the priming module, can that be bypassed? I'm thinking not, but I'm trying to take out anything that is known to fail. My fuel heater has been unplugged for a long time from the looks of the plug.
Look for what others have done with success.

Why fix something that isn't broke?
Leave the stock filter in place and use it.
The primer is part of the lift pump, no way to eliminate it.

Just do the draw straw. The rest of the system components are very robust and need little attention, except for fuel line aging. Do the fuel heater delete as per Joe G. write up.

I really shouldn't need to do the fuel heater delete since it appears it has been unplugged for years, correct? It's the electricity that makes it fail, correct?

You are correct. My heater has been unplugged for years and has been no problem.

Why not just delete the heater if its not being used? Its simple enough to remove or reinstall should you actually want it again

It's even simpler to just unplug the heater or remove the small heater relay on the firewall.
What causes them to leak is overheating wires going into the heater.

I saw that video, and might just go ahead and remove the heater even though it's been unplugged. Thanks for the info on the Sump, but I think I'll skip it. I do a lot of off road, brushy driving and would hate to snag that sump deal.

Be prepared to suck air <1/4 tank if you park on a slope. I used the DS, nice unit, but it would have been better for me to adapt it into the oem bottom bowl assy, rather than using the straw. I plan to redo my setup.

I ordered:
New Fleetguard fuel filter
Vulcan draw straw
3/8 diesel fuel hose
Fuel elbow hose
pressure snubber
fuel pressure guage/mount

Missing anything? I decided to not do the return hose per suggestion from Geno's, I guess just the feed line has the problems.

to Genos Garage, always very helpfull folks and good prices!!
