Problem resolved, one flaky sensor and a new part breaking quickly after installation

.

Hello Everyone

The transmission is finally shifting correctly

The transmission fluid temprature sensor was flaky. Not completely dead, but ocassionally giving incorrect readings to the PCM.

And the potentiometer that I had just bought from Radio Shack had flaked out also.

A new sensor and a new potentiometer seems to have solved the problem.

Fingers crossed, that it will continue to work well.
Hoping there is not an underlying problem causing the new parts to malfunction again.

Thanks for all your help guys.
Have Fun !

Excellent follow up. I'm considering buying an 2nd gen auto, so it's great to learn about some of the auto trans querks.

Thanks!

Back to no torque converter lockup !! Ahhaahaa!

.

Hello Everyone

Well the tranny was working well for a while now it is up to its old tricks again.

No torque converter lockup.

I have a potentiometer installed in the dash that replaces the throttle position sensor.

And a 1k ohm resistor in place of the transmission temperature sensor.

I get 4th gear and can change when it engages with the potentiometer, but no torque converter lockup.

What would you check next ??

Thanks
Have Fun !

I had a manual tq lock up switch installed. Love it. I found out it was so easy in another post to install, I was mad I spent the money to have a shop do it. Now if it doesnt lock, I do it when i want it. Also works great in 1st and 2nd when towing and want it to be locked up and not heating up the tranny.

.

How about having a brakelight-like switch control the lockup.

The switch is controlled by the break pedal.
On with no brakes on.
Off during braking.

Will this hurt the tranny ?

Thanks

I dont know? I cant put it in drive with the converter locked, it is like a standard in first gear and dumping the clutch. If I have mine locked in while rolling through the gears it shifts super hard. But that is how I had the tranny built.

Still fighting this thing,
47rh transmission.

Installed a new potientiometer in place of the throttle position sensor.

And installed a new resistor in place of the transmission fluid temprature sensor.

The transmission is shifting to 4th gear correctly now.
And is controled by the potentiometer.

But the torque converter is not locking up when it should.
I have tested it manually with a switch and it enguages when the wire to the torque converter lockup solendoid is grounded.

Anybody know what to check next ???

Thank You.

I have a 96 with the 47re and have been having the same problem since I bought it. About a month ago the tranny was locking perfectly every time. Now I am back to no lock up. It tries to lock but seems like it just slides out of it. Doesn't seem to be enough pressure to keep it locked. If you figure anything out let me know. I will do the same.

trans converter lockup

I believe you will have to change your converter to the upgraded versions to solve the problem.
These trucks did not have enough tranny for these big trucks and especially when you put a load behind it.
Go to jasperengines.com and you can find out the upgrades that were done. Either way it will be pricey.

good luck!

If the normal adjustment does not work you can change it to use a potentiometer. A bad brake switch is probably not the cause of erratic OD and lockup. the brake switch may be out of adjustment a little bit so bumps could cause an unlock.
What's the value of the potentiometer?
