Ideal oil change interval

I've been doing it every 3K. But it's getting more expensive. Just wondering what you guys thought about going 4-5K?

I think that 3K is WAY to early. I do it at 5K and have it checked every other time by Blackstone labs. By looking at the TBN number, they recommend a easy 7-8K. The only reason I don't do that is because I have to watch 4 cars. Far easier to remember multiples of 5 instead of doing the math for each car.

pick yourself up one of these... pretty amazing. an oil change is what around a $100?? this will pay for itself in 8000 miles. Super easy install too! all R&D was done by blackstone labs...

Problem is, I don't see them made for the 2ed gen trucks. They start at 2004.5.

With oil analysis every 1k miles from 5k up to 12k my Delo 15w40 was still good to go.
I settled for every 10k for the last half million miles.

One thing folks don't recognize is oil quality has improved vastly in the past five years.
Oil change intervals for our 12 valves were written back when oils were way different.
That's why the new trucks have a 15k interval. It's not because the engines are better, it's because the oil is.

I change mine every 5-6k only because I make a lot of short trips since my truck is my only vehicle.

With the AMSOIL BMK-21 kit and the EABP-100 filter, I will change by oil analysis. Right now I am over 3000 on the current change and the oil looks just like when it was installed.

I agree and disagree. Oil was different, it was designed for the high soot that 12 valves and other diesel engines of the time produced. The additives were in line with the EPA mandates of the time. The newer engines run much cleaner and the addition of particulate filters and other clean air add ons resulted in a drastic change in additive packages. If anything, due to the loss in zinc and detergents on the newer oils it may be that more frequent changes are needed. I have stuck with 5k changes, simply because 3k changes would sometimes make oil changes necsessary more than once a week. Had I known that I would be keeping this truck so long I would have installed a duel bypass oil filter a long time ago and used synthetics.

You have it backwards.
The newer engines produce more soot and the newer oil is designed to hold more soot.
