If you don't mind the VP44 go for it.... but I would keep my 12er. Many other reasons of course...

After owning a 97 12v 5 speed i said i wanted a short box and 98 12v's are hard to come by. Next option 24v plus i could get a newer truck with a nicer interior.
BUT didn't want to take the chance on the weak lift pump and vp44. Looking at right off the bat changing the lift pump to a updated fass ect. ~$500 then if you need a VP pump job another ~$1000 plus. Then you have to deal with a pcm controlled engine.
After dealing with PSD's and other electrical controlled rigs I couldn't do it. Bought another mechanical 12V.
Got to love the old 12V dinosaurs.

12V being all mechanical and having the P pump makes it a more reliable truck IMO. The 24V pumps are ok as long as they NEVER lose fuel pressure(IE aftermarket lift pump set up and fuel pressure gauge is mandatory). The bottom 1/2 of the p pump is lubricated by engine oil. The VP only gets lubrication from the fuel going threw it. With a VP lose fuel pressure and lose the pump. Enough said
If i was loaded I'd have a 24v and pay someone to work on it :P
I need a reliable truck that i can work on with a screw driver and wrench so the 12V is more my style.
