Hmm. I know where it goes. You need a diagram, though, to put it back. IMO. If it were me, at the least, I'd do seals at this point.
If you were empty, bearings and chain would be my concern. A blue (and stretched) chain is not good, for sure.
What you took a pic of is referenced as a "synchro spring" in the manual. The three tabs it holds (two springs) are "synchro struts." It's role is played in between 2-hi / 4- hi.
Looks like the rear output main bearing retaining ring to me. Holds the bearing in place inside of the rear half of the case. Pretty sure the syncro thing your talking about has different dogs on the ring.
thanks for the help. since it was out for awhile what are the ffects of it being gone? otherwise why is it needed. its been makin noises for a couple months now wnd just took it apart. also if the shaft moves where the snap ring goes would that cause the shaft to move and chain to hop? thanks

Basically its there to reduce the length of the shaft the bearing slides on. Inside the rear case half, there are dogs on the case that prevent the bearing from coming out of the case body, however the retaining ring keeps it in an even tighter spot in the case to prevent as much endplay on the bearing. Without it youll bet a bit of noise because the output shaft is going to move around more so than with it installed. Over time that excessive play can cause the chain to stretch out.
been forever sinve ive had one of these apart, but 4-5" sounds like its the retaining ring that holds the outer planetary ring gear into the case (cant remember i these things were set up like that or not)

Those have internal dogs on the ring, not external
