Driving along about 80 the other day when a very big thump went through my 97, the rear wheels locked up for about 10 feet, then I stopped and the rear end was in free wheel.
When I tore down, the ring gear and pinion were still in one piece (but ruined anyway), but the pin that drives through the middle of the carrier was fallen out and in a lot of pieces, the spiders were also missing some teeth.
The whole thing is garbage, but my question is : What causes these things to do this? Is this normal?
170 K miles, checked the oil level the day before, it was good. No leaks, and the pinion bearings had no slack in them. 3.54 gears
I turned the idle up to 950 rpm because it was always dying, is it slamming into gear too hard for the dana 70 to take?
