ok so i have this us gears unit on my '96 3500 dually ext. cab...i don't like it, i don't trust it, it doesn't work properly...i want to remove it and sell it....
my question, what all is involved in removing it?
from what i understand, i will need the stock tail shaft, and driveshaft. is that it?
also been told that the cummins 12 valve auto transmission is the same tranny that the gassers have, do the driveshafts interchange with the diesels/ and gassers? and will the tailshafts on the gassers interchange? if so which models will work?
WOW mine works great:thumbsup: I do not know what is involved in removing it but I would think that if it is 4x4 then both the front and rear drive shafts would need to be returned to stock, other than that I think the transfer case will mount to the trans and you would be good to go. If I were you I would check out what is up with the unit and get it fixed, I am sure it is a simple wiring issue as these units are the best out there and are bullet proof:thumbsup:
it's a 2wd, and no i removed a lovely chunk of metal from mine...bearing race i think. aswell as it not switching gears and the rear seal leaking like crazy.
Did you call the company and see about warranty? Cause no one will want to buy something that's broken. I know I would really like to have one, but I wouldn't even pay shipping on it if you pulled a chunk of metal out of it.
true enough, the company was sold off and production was killed. you probably wouldnt get anywhere with warranty and good luck on getting parts to fix it.
Not even worth trying to sell, pretty much just a throwaway item now lol
The one that sold on ebay probably wasnt in need of a serious rebuild, and the people offering you 3-500 probably havent got a clue what they are getting into!
to each their own though, just like these dodges, people will pay alot of money for a piece of junk!
Your the one that said it doesnt work and you pulled a piece of bearing out of it...
If a piece of ANYTHING was floating around in there, you would be ridiculously lucky if if didnt chew up a few more bearings and gears before you caught it. Or would you just do it the common half azz, just replace the blown up part and not do a proper rebuild...? (if it just needs bearings its not bad, if it needs hard parts, good luck)
Sorry for trying to talk some sense into someone that is planning to dump it off on someone, only for them to find out that its f'd!

Just saying, it might be worth your while to pull it apart and check it out. You might be lucky, it might just be a cheap fix and definitely worth trying to sell for a decent buck, or it could be so far gone that its dumpster material!
Driveshafts arent engine specific, but they are specific to the transmission and body style (length). same with the tailshaft housing...
realistically i wish i had a use for it, but i do the vast majority of my towing around town or maybe 30-40miles highway towing, all on flat ground, hardly worth justifying having it on there. but i'm affraid to remove it and tear it open....i can only have a truck down for 2...maybe 3 days, if i tear into it and you're right and it's junked, i'm somewhat screwed...don't really feel like registering another truck right now, at least until the 1st of the year for obvious tax reasoning.
you dont have to tear into it for no reason. its obviously got issues and needs to come out, so why not do your swap back to OE parts. then tear down the splitter and see what it looks like.
If its a cheap fix, its worth fixing it, and using it yourself or selling it for some decent coin. if its f'd, its not worth much, but it might be usefull to someone out there that needs some parts or has some parts for it.
Your trans should be a 47RE, so go scout out the junkyards for a 96-01 2500/3500 v10/cummins. cant recall 100%, but i do believe the V8 shafts were the same, tailshaft might differ though (46RE)
Should be able to find a cheap tailshaft and driveshaft somewhere...
none of the self service yards here will have anything of the diesel nature still intact, thats why i was specifically asking if the gasser parts would interchange. and no regular junkyard here will sell Parts off of a cummins transmission. they think they're gold.
But its either going to be a 47RE (which it should be), or a 47RH (if it was a very early oddball 96)
The RH and RE tailshafts are not interchangable
Another possibility for the driveshaft, call up some driveline shops. some places will chop off your yokes (where the real money is) and build you a new shaft for a couple hundred, might be one option if you cant find a junked one
No the diesel and gas transmissions are different but a lot of parts will inter-change. Pull the electrical connection off the drivers side of the trans, if it is a three pin connector it is a 47rh if a seven pin a 47 re.
it has a 3 pin connector directly under the shift lever on the transmission by the pan.
