ok just bought a 12 valve over the weekend truck has 332000 on it but got it for a great price, the turbo was junk on the truck was dumping oil out the exhaust and into the intake, changed the turbo and ran fine for about 30 mins, now it started popping kinda sounds like a gas motor backfire, happens at idle more that while on the throttle and if i get into the throttle while it popping theres a light blue cloud left behind me?? and it doesnt happen all the time its hit and miss, itll run fine for ten mins then start popping or it will start popping as soon as i start it??? :confused013: have no ideas what could be causing this im new to the diesel thing, any ideas????
and the turbo is a turbo off another 12 valve no oil leaking, it could be the oil left over from the last turbo, it was leaking oil bad, im sure the intercooler has some oil in it
Could be the turbo still leaking oil, which is vaporizing in the hot EGTs, burning and popping giving you some smoke. Are you losing oil? What's your MPG? What do your gauges read?
With 332K on the ticker, it may not be in the top shape of its life, depending on how it was treated before you got it.
pump timing, and as per the tech articles (at lest the one i wrote ) you do not need anything other than some basic hand tools to check/reset the timing back to stock (pin timing)
update, changed fuel filter and cleaned pre filter screen and changed oil, definitely helped throttle response but still no difference in the backfire/popping noise only seems to do it when its warmed up ran it for about 30 mins today and ran great then fell on its face but the smoke seem to go away not happening anymore, checked fuel pressure at filter 55psi at idle, not sure on how to check the pump timing read through the tech articles numerous times and still really don't understand it have a felling im gonna be trailering it to a shop
alright, havent had a lot of time to work on the truck but today i adjusted the lash (all were off atleast 5-7 thous) still does its popping backfire thing but now it only does it after it has been sitting at idle, got at video of what it is doing lots of bluish white smoke now
anyone have an idea? and just wondering if low compression can cause this, i have the front of my truck tore apart and the timing cover off and as i turn the motor over i can hear a hissing coming from the crankcase, assuming its blowby but should there be that much from just turning it over by hand? is this normal?
It sounds similar to my truck when the timing was off, it didn't pop while in gear but when I would put it neutral and rev it would pop like that. As for the blue smoke I have always had a little bit unless the truck is completely warm. I had popping and bad smoke one winter while driving once until the truck was completely warm if any amount of throttle was applied, turned out to be a bad fuel overflow valve opening at too low of a pressure. Replaced overflow and the truck ran fine.
Anybody else notice what he said about his fuel pressure-55 psi at idle?
