my friends truck wont run over 55 or 60 it cuts out and puffs white smoke any ideas does it in every gear if you try to run it up in the rpms. its a 5 speed.
Change the fuel filter-right now, if it hasn't been done very recently. What you describe is textbook correct for fuel starvation. If the filter doesn't fix it, take the little screen out of the bottom of the fuel heater assembly on the side of the engine and clean it. While you're at it, start the truck (with the screen reinstalled, obviously) and then attempt to lift up on the fuel shutoff solenoid lever. What you're checking for here is to make sure that the solenoid is in fact fully opening the valve. More than a pretty small amount of movement possible may mean that it's not being opened all the way. Just turning on the ignition will not suffice-you must actually start the engine to make this check.
thanks i will tell him to do it and see what happens.
