What gear do you start out in ? Do you use 1st even with out any load or do you start in 2nd..This pertains mostly to trucks with 4:11 as that is what I have.I have a 13" Valair clutch and it only lasted 30k and was told by locale friction shop that it was because I was starting out in 2nd all the time. This clutch has smelled like a burning clutch ever sense I put it in, when ever you start out . Even when starting in 1st although not as bad. Just letting it out with out hardly any throttle and then stopping and open the door you would think you had been slipping it to hold it on a hill. Do a three point turn and it would smell in the cab. Clutch never slipped when engaged under load until it was worn out. "the last 500 miles"I have driven sticks all my life and have never had a clutch go out. It was a 13" x 1.25" Stock Organic Replacement
Premium Brass Woven Organic Facings HD Spring Hub

3400# Pressure Plate
You ever contact Valair about this. And who ever you spoke to in that shop is a bunch of dumb nuts. Is this in your Ford? Are you sure the clutch releasing completely in your custom setup?
Yes I called them after I put it in and they did not have any idea why it would be doing it. Yes it is releasing completely I checked that first at the slave cly there is no pressure on the throw out fork. If that was the case I would think it would have been slipping when towing my 5th wheel I am at about 18k and I can tow in 5th pulling small grades and not have any slipping issues. it only did the smell thing on engagement. I think it was a bad lining I will know when I put it back together. I thought the starting out in second thing was BS also. Tires are stock diameter just wider.
as long as you dont have huge tires or were pulling anything, 2nd gear starts shouldnt have been a problem. granted you werent slipping it excessively or giving it fuel before the clutch was fully engaged.
As always, starting out in 1st is going to be easiest on the clutch. but with 410s its a PITA

same here, with the bigger boots, starting out in 2nd is a little hard on the clutch. so i always start in 1st.
Once you get the hang of actually being able to 'drive' the thing, you can bang through the gears faster starting from 1st, than someone starting off in 2nd and trying to ram and jam the gears
Find that sweet spot, whether you double clutch or float it, and you will be surprised.
With the '01 I drive I always start off in 2nd unless pulling close to 10,000 lbs., then I'll drop down to 1st. Haven't smelled the clutch yet and it is just a regular 'ole stock one.
i start out in second(or as the knob says first) because low is too damn low for normal driving with stock sized tires on it. once i get bigger boots im sure ill be using first gear for regular driving. right now ive only used it once since i bought the truck and that was to see how low it was and its GD low lol.
I have the truck back together and the clutch peddle pressure is about half of what it was before. When I put in this clutch originally it was a lot harder to push than the one with the 7.3 was. I thought that it was because of the higher plate pressure . The only thing that was changed besides the disk was the throw out bearing. The one that came in the kit fit rather tight on the trans input collar it had seals on both ends. A sticky throw out has been a common problem for these trans. I had forgotten about that. It really never acurd to me sence it was this way with all new parts. The throw out bearing I got was a Timken made in the good old USA. It actually has a wider area for the clutch fingers to ride on. I was also surprised to find that the throw out bearing was already worn out - dry sounding. I have not driven it yet but hopfully the sticky bearing was the problem.
I drove the truck today. I no longer have the loud gear rollover noise, and I mean really loud like you could not here the rattle from the motor over the noise that was coming from the clutch trans area. It must not have been gear noise but was most likely noise coming from the clutch plate springs. As stated before pedal pressure is way less also, feels very weird that it is so easy. The clutch no longer has a burning smell when released. And feels a little more grabby when you let it out. Also 2nd gear was starting to be hard to shift into with out grinding and that seems a little better but I think the synchros are gone now.I hope this clutch last longer.
