HELP! my 98 12 valve wont idle

yesterday i was coming home from work and pulling into the gym parking lot and noticed my engine was revving higher than normal to the point where i needed to hold down the brake harder and noticed my tach was at 1500 rpm without pressing the go pedal. then i found a parking spot and put into park. then the rpm's were like over 2000. my only reaction at this point was to turn the engine off. then i opened the hood and examined the throttle cable and all seemed ok but then again, i dont know much about this stuff. after moving it back and forth i went to start the truck up but it wasnt idling at all. in other words, now i have to hold the pedal down a little to start the engine but when i let off the pedal it just stalls. what do i do?

as a sidenote: the only mod i did recently was install a zero plate 4 days ago. all was fine until today.

as a sidenote: when i was driving home from work today i got a little aggressive with the go pedal, to the point where i may have jabbed it hard as opposed to a nice and easy foot pressure. this is what is leading me to think it has something to do with the throttle cable.

another sidenote: (and this is what is scaring me) when i installed the zero plate, my flathead driver bit for my hand torque tool fell out of the tool in the vicinity of the fuel pump. i DID NOT see where it landed. i must have looked for an hour but couldnt find it. i kept thinking there is no way that it fell in the pump where the groove is in the plate. but now i am thinking it did. could this be the cause or am i being paranoid?

I was able to drive it home but it was a pain in the butt trying to keep an even pressure on the pedal to keep the engine running, (as you may imagine).

well, i did find that flathead hand torque tool bit in the pump! i about freaked out when i grabbed it with a homemade magnet probe. it was at the bottom rear of the pump immersed in oil. it wasnt chewed up or anything so i don' think anything happened to the pump but it is uncanny that my idling problem began 4 days after it fell inside of the pump. is this just a coincidence? i hope so. i dont think the idle adjustment bolt needs to be turned since at first i was getting way too high idle and then absolutely no idle. it was though the linkage got stuck and then when it got unstuck, the idle went to zero.

today i have been playing around with the idle adjustment screw and i dont think this is the problem. i can adjust it to where i am getting 1500RPM and when i put it in Drive, it stalls. when i adjusted it to 1500RPM, the idle seems to go up and down by itself and i have to give it fuel to get it to go back down (sounds odd but thats the case). i dont think its the linkage. i lubricated all of the linkage with WD40 and it seems to operate smoothly when i manually actuate it by hand under the hood. i want to avoid going to a mechanic. i've been down this road and it is not pretty as you all may know.

I read of a fellow who lost a screw in his pump, same hard pedal symptoms.
Sorry to say it but he finally had to have the injection pump rebuilt.

Sounds like something to do with the governor springs and weights.... The way it sounds you checked your pump and didnt find anything laying in the bottom.... When I messed up my pump the weights were layin in the bottom but it had the same symptons that yours has...

now i am considering taking the truck off the road and parking it in the garage and doing this myself. if i buy a p7100 pump from somewhere like bd diesel, is it hard to swap out with the old one? i havent read much about this on the forum. StrokerSmoker, did you replace the pump yourself?

The governor weight assembly was damaged, find a Bosch certified shop to look into what will need to be replaced.

Sounds like one of the Governor assemblies were damaged. I'd find a pump shop to see if they can repair it. It really may be a simple repair within the pump.

Was it a bit you droped/lost or someone else?

i dropped it in the pump. i didnt realize i did it. i think it has something to do with the governor because when i was driving it home after the problem occurred it was like the truck was on nitrous oxide. it had huge power and the rpms were around 3000rpm's and i DONT have 3gsk installed. i am considering just purchasing a p7100 pump from BD-power or ATS that already has this mod installed and then paying to have someone else install it. does the installation of this pump cost alot?

also, i cleaned the prefilter out this morning and it wasnt that dirty. the fuel filter is new. i checked the overflow valve and that "looks" good. the linkage and throttle cable looks good too. i am pretty sure its the pump. i guess i need a mechanic to actually verify that it is the pump and then just go for it.

I didnt replace my pump myself... I had a shop do it... I could have probably did it my self but would rather spend the money to know im getting it done 100% correct....SO i would defiantly try to find a reputable shop somewhere and have it done...

It probobly would've been alot cheaper to have a pump shop rebuild your old pump than buy a new one.
