How do I tell what model Transmission I have

I have a 95 and a 97 cummins both are 4x4 autos and I wanted to know how do you know what transmission is in them or are they locked to be one? I keep hearing about 47 and 47 re trannies and the diesel auto thing to me is new. The one truck is mine and the other my brothers and we are bombing them both and figure that this will be the first failure spot. Thanks for the help. ps anyone living close to western pa with some cores or good trannies for sale I would be interested along with any performance parts.

The '95 has a 47RH. The '97 has a 47RE. The main difference is the governor. The 47RH has a mechanical fly weight governor. The 47RE has an electrically controlled governor. The valve bodies are different because of the difference in the governors. The 47RE is shorter than the 47RH because the latter has the governor in the tail shaft assembly. The electrical connection on the 47RH is a flat three wire connector. The 47RE has a round connector with 10 wires. The torque convertors are the main weakness. The stock one will move the truck, but that's about it.
