KDP question from soon to be Cummins owner

First post here.

My wife and I went to look at a 94 2500 tonight. The seller mentioned a leak from near the timing belt, but didn't know what it was.

Smart wife that she is, she discovered what a KDP was. The price of the truck is cheap enough, but I don't now if this leak is the KDP, or just the paper gasket leaking, as it has high kilometres (411,000).

Just wondering what my options are here, as we were planning to meet with the owner and buy the truck tomorrow night.

Thanks,
Dunl

Timing belt? There is no timing belt. All gears. I'm not sure what you are asking. If the KDP has knocked a how in the gear case it will need to be fixed. Look here for how to fix it: CumminsDatabase.com :: 12V Dowel Pin Repair The place that is normally damaged can't be seen very well if at all. The symptom is that there is big oil leak at the front of the engine.

Sorry, timing gears...it was late last night.:fist:

The engine seems to be running very smoothly. If it has knocked a hole into the case, besides a leak what other damage could be done by it?

At 411,000km, I'm just wondering if it has been like this for a while or not, and if there is other pemanent damage that can be caused from the cracked case. I know if the pin goes through the gears and chips them, they may need to be replaced.

I guess what I'm wondering is, if the pin has fallen out and the engine is running smoothly, how much dmagae can I expect from this insides, and what potential for damage is there if it isn't fixed immediately?

Thanks.

If the engine is still running good about the most besides the broken case could be chipped or broken gear teeth. I know several people who have many miles with broken teeth, no problem.

Sometimes the pin falls out: and takes out the gears, and rides between the gears and gets ground down, and very rarely falls into the oil pan and does nothing.

With that many km it makes me wonder if it has already been taken care of. Many a KDP has been tabbed, pined or otherwise fixed.

IMO it is totally worth the three hours or so that it would take to take the cover off and look, if you prevent the damage you will feel that way too.

There are jigs around that various people have and will loan to folks to get this taken care of. We had a party out here a while back and some guy showed up with a KDP kit. We fixed two that day. There were two big flat wrenches for the fan nuts, and a jig for the place to drill the hole. It was really simple to do.

One advantage that the TST kit <--clicky link has is, they provide a sealant to use on some bolts under the front cover. If these bolts loosen and back out they can have the same effect as a KDP on the gears.

Okay guys, that's what I was thinking - thanks for the quick replies. I wasn't quite sure (still reading up on these engines) if there were other issues that might happen, that need immediate attention.

So is it safe to say that this vehicle would be an okay purchase, seeing as the first gens up here go for about $2000 more than this one?

I tabbed mine two weeks ago... you don't check your kdp, you tab it. it has to be done or else.... bite the bullet. your lookin at six hours your first time... do your timing at the same time... pull the front end apart radiator back and pull the cover off the front of the motor... your there.

If your engine has high miles or is leaking some from the front seal, I wouldn't mess with the parts house oil seal. I replaced mine with a standard seal, made sure everything was dry as per instructions and within a day or two was back to leaking. Found out you can get an oversize seal and sleeve from cummins that gives you a fresh new sealing surface. This one has not leaked a drop in 150,000 miles.:thumbsup
