Tq converter shot or complete transmission? How can you tell?

First of all, you all have been VERY helpful and I really do appreciate it. Ive gotten a lot of good advice and help from yall. Some of the things I have been reading, however, are leading me to believe that, since the TQ converter is such junk in these rigs, that often times IT is the failed part alone? How can you tell? Are there certain characteristics, RPMs, shifting issues, fluid?
Im just wondering if that might not be the issue, seeing as how my current tranny was just rebuilt 10/06. (Just wanted to use it! )

Mine would shutter really bad under lockup. I think I could have maybe done a TC and VB and been ok but I had the money so I went for the new tranny too

Was it rebuilt to stock or any aftermarket goodies?

You can have a convert causing concerns like stalling when put into gear, high RPM's when taking off with soft shifts, shudder going into lock-up or no lock-up at all, stalls when coming to a stop, yes the fluid would be dark with sings of metal flakes in it. When you say the converters are junk in these trans its not they are junk they are not built for higher tq and hp. You have to understand that raising line pressure to a point helps the T/C to live longer too. Also keeping temps down plays into this too.

Hope this helps

No, its not doing any of that(yet). When in any gear above 1st and holding it at steady throttle, it will revv up a few hundred rpms and then come back down. Like pushing the clutch in slightly on a M/T.

Well if a T/C is slipping it will slip all the time when not in lock-up, It sounds like you have another concern going on. What you may have going on here is called lock unlocking of the T/C. It could be the TPS, Voltage spikes from the alternator, engine +trans Temp sensor, Lock-up Solenoid, Battery's or Bad connections at the Battery, RPM spikes, PCM re-flash, Bad speed sensor on the trans O/D unit and or speed signal from t-case.
