Exclamation OMG!!! My auto tranny is going out! WTF!?

Big shocker, huh?! I already knew these trannys were inadequate for a Cummins, but I gotta admit, I had no idea they were THIS bad! I took this truck out into the mud this ONE time....never even had to use 4 wheel drive.... and it is slipping in anything over 1st gear!
The tranny in it now, is a Dodge replacement and it is under warranty, so I will be gettin a new one. But here is the question.... What parts can I buy to make this new one LAST, without getting into the internals? Is the TQ converter the true issue with these things? I had a 98 and it ran great. This tranny shifts like crap! I know the earlier had some issues(see above...lol), but surely there is a way to make them better without bustin the bank.
Thanx!

Yeah, that is kinda what I am thinking. Im thinkin I will take out the tranny, take it to the Dodge house, throw it thru their window(Call my wife and get bailed out), take the new one home, remove the crappy OEM valvebody, and install new. Install new tranny with new converter. Id be putting only bout 1500 in it and be hella stronger.

you might check on the DTT single disk converters if your trying to save money. A new VB and a single disk DTT can probly be scrounged up for cheaper than you think.

Try a couple of things before just up and building an entire tranny - Pete's gotta good point on what to get.

No. I wont have to buy the tranny. It is warrantied. I just plan on 'modifeying' it after I get it and figured a VB and TQ would be the 2 best things to do.

I think Gus is still running a single disk but I'm not sure. He can vouch for them though I know he put one through hell and he might still be using it.

Thumbs up

Mine slipped once for sure, and probably more than that. I didn't toast it. I went to a local guy I trust and he put a VB and TC in it. He also inspected other stuff, he said it all looked good. Since that time, I have had no issues. I did tell the trany guy that I intended to bump the hp and told him what my goal was. So I believe you can beef them up.

Nice yours is covered It is a good place to start.

Hey thanks everyone! I dont pull squat. I just cruise up and down the highway racking up the miles. Everyother weekend or so, I cruise old backroads and do some 4x4 action, so I figure a single disk will be adequate. I do have the stock plate slid all the way forward and the AFC housing, but nothing really additionally power-wise.

A DTT single disc with a good VB will hold way more than what you have now.
