Question Homemade Timing Tools???

Okay, I know somebody has posted this before, but I can't find it. I'm trying to find the thread about homemade timing tools... Something about using a drain plug from the oil pan or something... Can somebody steer me in the right direction? Thanks!!!

I know this is an old thread, but...

Does the drain plug screw in where the adaptor normally would in the DV threads??? Also, why would you thread the hole in the center of the drain plug? It sounds like you could just hold it still with the set screw... Finally, will this work without the special "tip" for the dial indicator if I get the one from Harbor Freight??? Thanks...

The center hole where the gauge slides thru does not get tapped or threaded. The set screw (the screw sticking out the side does get tapped).

You also might need to use a washer or spacer (just like a gasket on your drain plug) to take up a little space.

Yes, the normal $10.00 HF gauge/indicator works without any special adapters. The drain plug just screws in using the normal DV threads.

The drain plug gets threaded in, then the gauge, tighten set screw enough to hold gauge but not crush the shaft.

delivery valve threads

Is the size of the delivery valve threads an unusual size, or could I easily find a bolt to modify for the indicator holder.

Let me answer it this way: The drain plug size for our trucks is 22mm x 1.5 I don't know if you can find a bolt locally in that size or not. Then you still have to drill and tap it. The drain plug is like 8 bucks plus shipping, and seems to do a good job. Can't beat the price.

Here is a link to the place I picked up mine.

Metric Oil Drain Plugs

What I did was buy a magnetic one, and used my old one as the holder. YD

delivery valve threads

thanks for the info, great link. I would not be surprised to have several of these laying around in the shop I work at, unless (like U said) it is not a typically used size??
