Here's what I've got going on... My truck is a '96 3500 4x4 dually. The tie rod ends were getting crappy, so I decided to upgrade to the '98 steering setup. The only issue is that the factory steering damper doesn't work now. I'm just wondering what the best option is for an aftermarket steering damper/stabilizer. I'd like to hear some personal recommendations. Also, the '98 steering is a huge upgrade. What a difference, the bumpsteer and road wander are gone!
I see nothing wrong with running the dual setup. I am currently running stock steering components and BDS dual fox 2.0 stabilizers, quick easy install and personally I believe it extends the life span on all of your steering components. I'm also running 37s and can let my steering wheel go and have no road wonder. Couldn't before I replaced everything up front and added my dual setup.
Why doesn't the factory dampener fit anymore? When I upgraded to the 08.5 and up steering on my 01, I used a factory 4th gen dampener. Maybe that would work for you?
I replaced all ball joints, wheel bearings, drag link, inner outer tie rods, and so forth. I upgraded to a little bit more beefy components than stock, eventually I will go to the cross over steering, but rather spend money elsewhere. If it ain't broke why change it lol
I did the wheel bearings, rotors, calipers and pads about 6 weeks ago. After I do the linkage in the next week or so, I'll just have ball joints left and I'll have a new front end! Need to justify to the wife spending 500 bucks on Dynatracs lol.
I got a kit on EBay for 133 bucks, shipping included lol. I called to make sure that the parts were adequate and they said they use OEM or better parts and there's a lifetime warranty on them, so I'd say it was money well spent. Parts showed up a day early and everything feels really solid. Worst case, if they continue to fail, I'll just start getting Moog or something and replace them as I go.
Sounds to me like you've spent some time around Motorcycles - On trucks we call them "Steering Stabilizers" and of course on bikes we say "Steering Dampers" so please clue me in on what it is you ride, or wrench on for someone else?
Id be happy to share my stable of Ducati's which I raced for years! And yes, each one always had a killer aftermarket "Steering Damper" on it too!
lol I honestly have never worked on a motorcycle and don't know much about them either. Unfortunately i recently sold my 01 Cummins, so now I just have an 04 civic and 06 crv. Hoping to get another ctd truck in the near future though I call them dampeners because to me they "dampen" shocks from the road rather than stabilize lol didn't realize there was a correct term.
Yeah good to know, I thought after 98 they were all t style. On my 96 I had to fab a new mount as the factory one wouldn't work with the t style linkage.
