change oil pan gasket

I have a 96 cummins that I'm currently rebuilding the transmission. I noticed a pretty good oil pan leak, and would like to change the gasket. The book tells me to pull the motor. I would like to know if it is possible to take off the engine to trans mount, and slide the pan backward and down to get it off without pulling the motor. Please help?

You will probably need to jack the motor up at least to get some clearance over the cross member. It will not just slide backwards.

Most times the pan leaks from people overtightening the bolts and deforming the rim of the pan. Make sure to straighten it out before replacing the gasket or it will likely leak again.

Thanks for the advise, everything is appreciated. To get the pan off the cummins the motor has to come up about 2 inches. The trans has to be off, which mine was off being rebuilt. At this point you remove the flywheel and trans to motor housing. I have a Banks twin ram, take all that off the top of the motor because there is only about an inch clearance. Pull the motor up, and you can get to the oil pump pick up tube bolts on the bottom of the motor. Remove the pick up tube inside the pan, and slide the whole thing back out of the frame cross member. Whew, a lot of work for a pan gasket!
