Yep, sounds like a good price. As long as body and drivetrain is in good shape. Issues with interior, i.e., torn driver seat & cracked dash, ect., to be expected.

I got my 98 Ram 12V Quadcab, SLT Laramie, Dually for $6500. Owner was asking $9000, but he dropped the price because of idling problems after he installed the 4K GSK. HHe was afraind it had IP problems. I got the governor springs adjusted, now it is fine. Mine has no rust on body, original paint in good shape, plus previous owner did around $6500 in mods, including new 700HP tranny. Mine also had the torn drivers seat, cracked dash, typical stuff.

Sorry to be long winded, just wanted to give you more to go by. Definitely, the biggest issue besides body rust, 53 block, KDP, oil leaks, is the auto tranny. If is the original 47RE, it will be fine if it has been maintained properly. However, if it had the crap run out of it, you will be looking at 3k-4k for a new tranny. Also, if you decide to do any mods on the engine, i.e., especially turning up IP, new injectors, and turbo, you will break the tranny in a hurry and will have to get a beefed up tranny to handle the extra torque and horsepower the 5.9 can put out.

12v price

I picked up a 97 2500 Xcab 5 spd 160K miles. for 6K. I've owned alot of diesels and I have to say I'm impressed. It was owned by a retired man pulling a 5th wheel, so the truck is mint. He added airlift and exhaust brakes. First thing I noticed was pulling a trailer over the Eisenhower tunnel is I didn't have to down shift- 5th gear and I was passing everyone. Picked up a 90 gallon tank for my veggie oil, so I can go across country. Gets 17 MPG pulling and 21 unloaded, you can't beat that on a full sized truck. I wanted a mech IP and other than not having 4WD, I can't complain. The straight 6 beats a v8 hands down- better engine room to add my fuel heater system and run the lines. You get the bullit proof drive train like a mercedes with the advantages of a full size truck. Looks like I got the right year, especially for veggie oil. I just like the simplicity of the 12V and the economy of veggie oil. These would be worth twice the price, we need to keep this a secret!

Sounds like there are some great deals floating around out there. I just bought my first CTD. It's a '96 ex. cab with 2WD, automatic, and 275K. It's definitely got some wear and tear. The last owner did a bunch of work to the front end, and I was told the transmission was rebuilt not too long ago. I got it for $4500. Probably not the best deal in the world, but it seems like a solid truck. I'm proud to be the owner of a 12-valve Cummins Dodge. These trucks are fantastic.

Hey Guys I am about to buy a '97 2500 SLT, auto, 4x4 with 119K for $7000. Original owner, recreational hauler and pretty well maintained, but not super anal like me. I spent a good hour driving it and didn't feel any weird shifting, just the turbo kicking in and such. THe only other diesel I have been in was driving my dad's '08 6.7 cummins and talk about a rocket!!! The oil pan is leaky, but other than that its pretty clean. Can't wait to get the badass truck in the driveway, and I too am going veg when I get the cash, and going to run some bio until then.

Can someone post a link to a good thread on the auto transmission problems? This concerns me a lot, and makes me want to take it to a pro before I drop the cash... Any thoughts or help on the understanding the "transmission problems" will be appreciated.

Editid a search and learned a lot, I will definitely be taking it to a tranny shop before I buy!
