front axle seal
I've got to change out a drivers side front axle seal this week on a 95 2500 4x4 and i'm a little confused about whats nessecary. The FSM isn't really clear, and I read the axle tech page but still have a few questions. It looks like the diff carrier needs to come out. Does that mean that both axles have to be pulled? And does it need to be re set up after installation or does it just bolt right back up? Thanks...

Yes, both axles have to come out, yank the carrier our and the drivers side seal is right behind the drivers side bearing on the carrier. The carrier should not need to be reset unless your changing the bearings or you mix up the bearing cups! The passenger side seal is in the outer tube and has to be swapped out through the CAD opening, that one it a bit of a bytch! Keep in mind that the proper oil level for the front diff is appx 3/4" BELOW the bottom of the fill hole. If you fill it to the bottom of the fill hole you can guarantee that it will leak.

If you replace the driver side, you might as well replace the passenger too. Both axles are already on the ground, do. If you want, I would be willing to send/lend you a set of axle seal setting tools, you pay shipping. It makes the job go in about 10 minutes. You might want to consider a set of outer axle seals from Madd 4wd. Goggle them. They are installed at the very end of the axle tubes, preventing dirt and crud from getting in there.
