Fuel Shutoff Solenoid Sticker SHOCK !!

My truck has not been starting right , sometimes it will start the first time but most of the time I have to try to start it anywhere from 2 to 6 times . I was thinking that it is the fuel shut off solenoid so I went to the Dodge stealer to see if they had one & I was floored when they gave me the price $ 615.00 plus $ 48.28 in tax for a total of $ 663.28 . I cleaned the the fuel shut off relay & the connection & will see how the truck starts today . I went to a auto parts store & they have a universal shut off solenoid but I don,t know if it will work on the truck also where can I get the relay ? Should I replace the relay first & how can I test the relay to see if that is the problem ?

Does it just crank for a long time when trying to start? Sounds more like an over flow valve issue than a fuel solenoid.

BTW, got my shut off solenoid for ~ 180 shipped off ebay

First off, that price is crazy. You can get it from Genos Garage for $198.00, I bought one. A quick way to verify if it is the shutoff solenoid, is to disconnect the linkage of the fuel-shutoff valve from the fuel-shutoff valve. Then move the shutoff vavle linkage manually, toward the front of the truck. This will enable the fuel flow to the IP. If it starts okay then, you know it is an issue with the fuel-shutoff solenoid. If not, look else where. As stated previously, could be the shutoff relay sticking, which is located on the firewall above the engine.

The shutoff solenoid is a very simple electromagnet, they RARELY go bad unless they are overheated due to sticking starter contacts.

Pull yours apart, inspect the boot for any signs or wear/damage, clean it out thuroughly, reinstall and readjust the arm length.

No I don,t crank it long about 3 seconds and then I turn off the key & try to restart , most of the time it will start the 2nd or 3rd try but it has gone up to 6 tries a few time , when the truck starts it will start right away , sometimes the truck will start the 1st time .

Dave is correct.
The solenoid is by far the most needlessly replaced item on a 12 valve, the problem almost always lies elsewhere.
Unless the outside is very visibly burned up from the lift coil staying on due to worn out starter contacts the solenoid is very likely just fine.

Problem is most often the blue wire at the battery corroded, bad relay on the firewall or missing boot that has allowed the solenoid to get gunked up and bind.

Read about it and buy parts here> LarryB's Dodge starting problems solved here.
