12 valve head

Where is a good place to buy a head? Ive got three blocks, had two heads. Both heads are cracked really bad. I need one asap, just wondering where a good place to get one would be, without going to CUMMINS. I really dont want a used head, unless someone here has one that they know is good.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I dont know where they are cracked. I dropped them off at the machine shop the other day to get a valve job on both of them and they called back yesterday and said that they are cracked. Said they might be fixable, but it would be cost prohibitive. Ill find out where they cracked when I go pick them back up. I know there werent any visible on the face of the head. When I dropped them off, the guy even said they looked good, so it must be internal.

Ive heard bad things about those ebay heads. Or the new aftermarket ones anyhow. I checked last night and didnt see any used ones. A salveage yard close by has one Im going to look at tomorrow.

99% of time you will not be able to see the cracks without magnafluxing the head. It's the simple process of placing an electromagnet on the head and "sprinkling" iron filings between the two points of contact of the electromagnet. The filings we use have a yellowish tint added so that it is easy to see the cracks. The iron filings will line themselves up along any cracks that exist. If the cracks exist extending from a bolt hole or water passage, the head is junk. There's no real "fix" that's going to stop them from continuing their growth. If the cracks are in the valve seats, then it's a judgement call. Most those cracks are tiny and easily removed when grinding the seats during the valve job. I did a 24v head last week that I had found 56 cracks in the valve seats. The owner OK'ed continuing on to the valve job with the understanding that new seats may be necessary to correct the problem. All 56 tiny cracks ground out with the valve job. The only reason we continued was because none of the cracks extended past the seats...either into the ports or into the chamber. If they had done that, the head would have been junk. Ideally, I prefer to replace the seats where tiny cracks are found. Like I mentioned above, you have to really look at where the cracks are, how big are they(tiny ones on the seats are normally just on the surface), and what direction are they headed. It's usually pretty obvious if the head can salvaged or not when the seats are involved. If the cracks are somewhere other than the seats, junk the head. You'll be better off in the long run.
