Speed Sensor Problems

About a month ago my speed sensor went out and I installed a new one problem fixed. One a hunting trip a week ago my tach started dropping to zero but still worked, on the way home yesterday it worked when I started it up, and then once it was warm it didnt work at all. Drove home with drained batteries, luckily I have a manual fuel shutoff cable. I have checked the gap on the sensor and cleaned the harmonic balancer, checked all wires and the plug all the way up to the wiring harness.

My question is what could cause the sensor to fail, PCU?

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated, I dont mind driving it without a tach but it doesnt allow the alternator to function without the tach reading.

Helly,

Can you post the resolution to your problem? I am having the same issue and could use your insight.

I ended up returning the sensor to NAPA and with some help from a mechanic they warrantied it. So far it has been working, I need to hook up a computer to it and see if the pcm is throwing any codes. Is would be cool if there was a way to bypass the pcm, so that if the engine is running the alternator would charge regardless of what the pcm is doing....
