WIF light after filter change

I changed the fuel filter and now the WIF light is on. I guess I have to drain the filter to remove the water, but I have no idea why water would be in there or how the light went on in the first place. I have changed many a filter before and this is the first time something like this has happened. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If the two wires going to the WIF are shorted you get a light. If anything got on the sensor while it was apart you will get a light. If the connector gets wet with any thing that will conduct electricity you will get a light. Connector should be filled with dielectric grease to stop any shorts.

When I changed mine for the first time the light was on when I was done. Read on here that it might be screwed in too tight. I backed it out about 1/2 a turn and the light went off. Didn't leak and no problem since then.
