Alright guys, I'm getting kinda scared here with this truck. My transfer case is hard to shift into 4HI from 2HI. With my superduty it took two fingers no matter if I was sitting still or doing 80mph. With this truck I have to pull hard and wiggle. Then shifting back into 2Hi is easy.
How hard shoudl it be to get from 2HI to 4HI? Is there a trick to it on these trucks? Should I do it stopped, moving, what?
I never noticed it at first, but with all the snow we've been getting I find I need 4wd a lot more, especially with the torque this thigns has.
Thanks for any ideas or suggestions,
George

who makes the transfer case?
most transfer cases are made by new process..
some ford and dodge transfer cases are the same!
so yer not totally free and clear yet sorry..
it's easy to tell just go under yer truck and on the back side of the transfer case on top there should be a round tag.. on top there should be a number like 241 XXX or somthing like that
Yeah, it's a NP. I realise that they are the T-case used in most applications these days. I wasn't sure if it had something to do with the front axle vacuum thingy, or somthing. I personally think it should slip into gear just as easy as my Ford did, maybe I can crawl underneath and see if there is something bound up with my linkages or something.
Thanks for the heads up though, I guess I sounded more ignorant than I really am (I promise)
Question for you Bow, how easy does your NP shift into 4HI? Is it a two finger operation, or does it take a hard tug, pull?
Thanks,
George

I'll hose it down with some PB blaster and then dry it off and spray with some grease and see if that helps any. There have been a couple of times when I couldn't get it to shift, or didn't want to pull any harder for fear of breaking something. It probably hasn't ever been used or cleaned though as the previous owner just used the truck to pull his camper with and being a snowbird he didn't hang around the winter weather all that much.

if you want to see if its in the case or the linkages.. go underneath and pop the linkages off the t case if you can move the lever on the t case relativly easy (probably need pliers) then its not in the t-case.. in which case lube up the linkages.. if it is really hard to move the lever on the t-case without the linkages on then you might be in for some trouble... i have a 94 that the 4x4 was always put to good use and it shifts with ease... just like my last dakota.. three finger pull on the coldest of days.. i hope all works out well.

you can should have a shift on the fly transfercase so that means it is acceptable to be moving while shifting into 4hi but you have to do it going relatively slow like i belive its 30mph or under. and to take it out of 4hi put in 2hi then back up a little.

You can shift into and out of 4hi at any speed, but manual states your not "supposed" to operate in 4hi above 55.. Coincides with the speed limit at the time of manufacture IMO...
As for backing up, Fords had to do that (maybe still do ) as the auto hubs would stay locked, our trucks don't use locking hubs. There is no need to backup.. When your 4x4 indicator goes out, your axle is free once again.
Another thing is the older trucks and some very heavy newer ones came with a new process 205 cast iron gear driven that is very hard to shift. It should be a 241 in there though if i remember right.
