Best KDP fix

Hey guys i know there are a ton of KDP threads but im just curious as to what you all think if the best way to take care of it, as far as tabbing goes. Would it be best to buy a kit with everything you need? i know some are expensive for simple parts but thought maybe someone knows of a cheap kit to get the job done. or should you make the tab and buy the gasket and seal or what? I don't know the dimensions of the tab or the size of the longer bolt needed. whats the most efficient way of doing this? Thanks, Corey

Think about it... The problem is simple, the solution is simple. Why would you buy an expensive fix for something that you can do at home with some sheet metal, or even just a blunt chisel? Most guys have spare bolts and sheet metal of some sort around the shop. Don't over think it. Get the gaskets and a weekend and take care of it. Hell I just knurl the end with a blunt chisel and put it back together. Some things should not be over engineered.

If you call cummins the pin and keeper is less than 5 dollars. Gaskets from autozone are less than 50. If the pin has not moved just drill a hole and tap a bolt in and it will cost less than that.

Ok i think i finally got this all figured out guys thanks. what if i wanted to bump up the timing? best to leave this to a shop or could i do it? i hear its a pain and you have to have the right tools..

Yeah you need tools or you are just guessing. Would be the time to do it though with the rest of the front apart.

What exactly is needed and how much does it cost? Sorry im kinda new to diesels but have been reading this forum almost every night for the past few months. Also is the stock bolt long enough if your tab isn't excessively thick? or is a longer one necessary?

You would need the gear puller and the rest of the timing tools. i dont have them so I could not tell you for sure what they cost, maybe someone who has them will chime in. The stock bolt is long enough for the cummind one, but it is very thin. I dont think they need to be real thick.

all u need is red locktite,black rtv,i suggest a new front crank seal,and a metal tab i used a tab i had layin around from a stage 8 header bolt kit worked perfect

Timing tools cost about $200, for most folks it's cheaper to have someone else do it.

OK I will probably leave the timing stock for now. Is there a recommended crank seal or could I just get any of them? Like at my local Advanced Auto Parts?
