Hi I am new to diesels but have been reading up on them a bit recently. I have seen countless threads on P Pumped 1st Gens but I was wondering if the reverse could be done. I did a search and could only find VE to P Pump threads. Has anybody done this or know if it can be done. I know the P Pumps are good but for how I want to build my Cummins (hopefully soon) I think a VE Pump would work great. Thanks for any input.
From what I have read the VE is a better DD pump. I have no experience with either so this is all from reading others' opinions. Apparently the VE nets better MPGs, produces torque at a lower RPM, and is a better performer at 400hp levels. I have no doubt the P Pump could perform I just think I would like the VE for a DD/occasional tow rig only looking at 400hp max.
So the only reason I could see going to a VE over a P-pump would be cost. The P-pump will do all and more but the VE is a cost effective alternative that will work for 400hp.
The only advantage the VE pump has that I can find is timing advance.
I am reasonably sure the swap can be done. However, you will need more parts than just an injection pump. You will also need the mounting stuff and the lines. You may even need to swap injectors. The block itself does not care what hangs off it. You may find an issue with injectors as depending on year they might have a different hole or thread size. To me this means you need a complete VE engine to take everything off related to the injection pump.
I can not see how spending a lot of money on a VE pump swap would be cost effective. Our P7100 is capable of hundreds of thousands or even over a million miles without requiring a rebuild. The 1998.5-2002 VP44 is problematic. and expensive to repair. I can see spending money to lose a VP44.
Comotion thanks for the reply. So I would pretty much need the whole VE setup to do it. That makes sense.
Hick. Thanks for your info. I know the P Pumps are good I was really curious about a swap sense I see a lot of P Pump swaps and I read some people prefer the VE for DD duty. I have been enlightened. Thank you Gents.
There were a few threads on different websites I saw. For example on Pirate 4x4 there was the discussion about a VE or P Pump to swap in place of a 454. There were plenty of people saying P Pump was the way to go, but just as many people saying the VE was extremely capable with better MPGs, runs smoother (less touchy throttle?), and produces torque lower in the RPM band. I know this may be a which one you like better contest but it is nice to know it can be done. I was not trying to say one was better than the other obviously since I have no experience, just wondering if the swap could be made and restating what others have said in regards to the two pumps.
My guess is that people are rationalizing the VE pumped engines because it's all they could afford or find at the time. I wouldn't automatically turn my nose up to VE pumped engine for a swap, but I sure as heck wouldn't downgrade a P pumped engine to a VE pump.
Exactly my first thought when I read "....but just as many people saying the VE was extremely capable with better MPGs, runs smoother (less touchy throttle?), and produces torque lower in the RPM band" I once had a p-pump "conversion kit" with everything needed from a 215HP '96 engine. The post wasn't ten minutes old before a guy from south TX contacted me. He used it on his 1st gen. I'll guarantee that if he sold his old parts, it wasn't to a 2nd gen owner.
One reason why the 89-93 trucks may get more mpg is they are lighter than the later model trucks. Lighter has some advantages. However, work the truck as GAmes said and well, I will accept his experience with what he said happened with mpg. Although as I recall his 1st gen was a non-lockup automatic and his 2nd gen is a manual.
Your memory is remarkable. With that said, however, other than my boat and a 9000 lb 5er the 1st gen was usually unloaded. I don't remember ever getting better that 15mpg with it. With the camper hooked up, never better than 10, plus it couldn't maintain 55mph over a freeway overpass. I hated that pick-up, it nearly drove me to owning a Ford.
I didn't mean to seem like a troll. Like I said this is based off reading other threads. If my impression is wrong I will accept that and be open to more experienced minds. I do appreciate all the comments and knowledge shared so far.
