I am replacing my clutch on my 94 dodge 2500. I have a couple of questions that most of you will think are dumb but the only way to find out is to ask.
1 can i drop my transmission and TC as one unis or do i need to take them apart?
2 when i pull my rear drive line and the fluid comes out of the slip joint what kind of fliud do i replace it with and how much?
3 where my transmission and TC come together is leaking a bit mor like seaping what is the name of the seal so i can order a new one?
Does your truck have an auto or manual trans. I believe the transfer case uses dex3 ATF. The seal you are looking for is called a tail shaft seal or rear trans seal.
1. You can do it either way. I split mine apart so it was easier to handle one at a time. Its only 6 nuts holding it in.
2. That's the ATF from the t-case. Good time to drain it and check your seals, I did a new output seal at the same time.
3. Tail housing of the nv4500 has a seal in it, common leak spot. Be sure to also check over that housing too, they're aluminum and known to break. Good time to do a cast iron upgrade too.
Not if you do it correctly. The cross member is meant to go upward to be removed. The wings have a slight outward angle so it sits into place. If you push is upward a a little bit, you'll be able to slide it back and right out. I did mine without spreading the rails and it was fine.
I thought I had gotten the first one I did out without it, but that was four years ago. With the truck I have now it didn't want to budge, until I spread the frame.
Same with mine. With over 850k miles on the frame the crossmember still doesn't move a lick without spreading the frame a little. Over the life of the truck it has been removed and reinstalled at least 15 times.
