4" downpipe?

OK how does a dummy know which downpipe he has, and what gain do I get from a 4" downpipe on a stock 12V?

The downpipe is the exhaust pipe that comes out of the turbo and goes down to the exhaust. If it's about the size of a Coke/Pepsi can it's 3" which is stock. Also, the 4" usually is 3" at the turbo, and then flares out to 4" in the first 4-5". So if it stays the same size, it's probably stock 3", on a 12 valve truck.

Good job explaining that Racer 9 It is very easy to tell once you know what your looking at! There is a huge gain going from stock to 4". Dont know if you have a pyrometer but the hot gasses will flow a heck of alot faster

On a stock truck you might get a touch of HP but mainly lower EGTs and you'd be preparing for a future of

looks at the bends- if they look crimped you know you've got a stock downpipe.

Newbie to 12v so forgive me, but are you saying opening the exhaust to 4" will increase the chance of ruining the stock tranny?
What are EGT's???

Nope...what I meant was, intake and exhaust are just the beginning to dumping way to much money into performance mods . EGT = Exhaust Gas Temperature...when you start turning the pump up, etc, you'll increase combustion temps and too hot will result in melting things. A higher flowing exhaust (ie, 4") will allow air out faster and subsequently lower temps.

Ok, I'm with ya...I knew turning up the turbo (chip/tuner, etc) required larger exhaust, but can you get performance out of a 4" down pipe w/o any other mods?

Like I said before...you might get a couple horsepower and possibly some mpgs but you're generally only planning for future mods...

You won't gain any power, you might recover a little that is lost in a restrictive exhaust system, and it will help the motor breathe better, and run cooler.
You cannot "chip/tuner" a 12 valve. It is an all mechanical motor, which means all power upgrades require getting a little grease on your hands, and working up a little sweat. The plus side is that's all some of the upgrades require, in other words, FREE power.

Do a search for free or cheap upgrades here and you will find plenty. Once you start, you won't be able to quit.
