interesting dowel pin fix..

I dont know if I like it, can't help but wonder where the metal shavings went. But, it's done and it should work. Had already bought a tab for it but oh well. I guess this is a fix that doesn't require taking the cover off, but you gotta be a good shot and know where that pin is. I don't see the point in doing this if you already have the timing cover off.

That was done without removing the timing cover using a KDP jig invented by John Strenkowski from Tri-County Machine in Connecticut. The engine block is under pressure using compressed air which blows the chips out instead of letting them fall into the engine. Here's a link to his site:

Great idea as long as the dowel hasn't migrated. If it has, your pulling the cover to seat it anyhow.

I am glad I tabed mine, that would make me nervous.

There are a few jigs out there for doing it that way, beats taking it apart unless you have leaks anyway.

It is almost worth it to actually pull the cover as the front drive plate is almost always loose on the engine and the only way to re-torque the bolts is to get in there.

Not the right name, but all the accessory drives mount on a big plate that bolts to the front of the block -- cam gear, fuel pump, power steering and vacuum pump, etc. -- and like the issue with the KDP, the bolts that hold that plate to the front of the engine are often only finger tight on our model trucks. Take them out one-by-one, lock-tite, and re-torque properly.

The whole job doesn't really take any longer than just drilling out the KDP like you are looking at, except that you have to also pull the harmonic balancer and reinstall. Also a great time to play with engine timing because you can see what you are doing.

I am trying to get that point across whenever I see a KDP thread. Now is the best time to mark TDC!!!!!!!!! Especially for some who may not be as confident in doing something like that. Then just make sure you put your balancer back on the correct way. Whoever did the timing on my truck before me was off by four degrees because they're tdc mark was so far off

The bolt holes are body drilled in the balancer the bolts have room, lots of room. Unless you put a dowel in its not going to repeat and index the same
