I am running a Autometer 3781 8000rpm gas engine tach using a Dakota Digital DSL-1 w/a Flywheel Tachometer Interface Unit .Dakota Digital now sells a DSL-2 that comes with the probe(flywheel interface). This works very good.Just count the # of teeth on the flywheel, put that # in the DSL-1 and you set.I mounted the probe off the bottom of my trans bellhousing w/a bracket I made. There maybe some photos of it in my webshots below my sig.

I Have a 2 5/8 Autometer Tach that uses a pick up which ties to the outside of the alternator. About $130. I havnt fitted it as my truck is still being built
Running a Autometer 2 5/8 sport comp as well. A little on the small size (used to a 5" monster) and a bit off a pain to calibrate, but works well and will fit anything with an altenator.
