i have been hearing alot of speculations and opinions about the 12 valve cummins compared to the 24, now i understand that the 24 has more problems, but what about the 03 common rail? does it to better? and are threre any disadvantages in not being able to chip up a 12 valve? im looking at a 12 valve jus wanna make sure im choosing correctly, because my buddys all have chipped up trucks.thanks guys.
From what I hear the common rails are pretty good trucks other than needing injectors every 50-100k miles (maybe more). But then again, how often does a vp44 fail? You can go 100k miles on a vp44. Compared to how much parts are for a new truck, a vp44 isn't all too expensive anymore.
I believe you can still drive the dirt out of a 12v more than a newer commonrail but at 200k miles, no matter what truck you have, if you want it to run like new you will be replacing parts. A 12v injector will last 500k miles but will probably start giving you poorer fuel economy long before that.
I will tell you that it will be harder for you to compete with your friends. Newer trucks make more power to start with and can make another 100 hp relatively easily; whereas you'd be doubling your 12v's power to catch up.
Not trying to talk down 12v's cause I think they're an excellent engine. Just depends on what you're looking to do. Simplicity, longevity, buying high mileage, and nice diesel sound = 12v.

Doritos, Ceetos, or Lays? No, none of your buddy has chipped Cummins.
I have both, 98 24v and 03 common rail. I have put about 50k on the 03 and it had 56k on it when I got it. I quickly added a quadzilla 140 race box and then started replacing injectors, thankfully under warranty. Its had 3 injectors replaced between 56k and 93k a rear main seal and inner axle seal about 90k. Other than that its been an awesome truck. I got the 98 at 214k and replaced all front end parts except ball joints but im sure they were done once or twice before I got it and its got 225k now. The tranny had been rebuilt be the previous owner as well and the pump had never been tapped as far as I could tell unless it had a stealth plate. It still had the stock lift pump and I dont know what the pressure was but it still worked. It had 50 hp or so injectors in because I didnt notice much when I added 75hp nozzles. I added a fass pump, changed the 75's for 150's and also had a quadzilla xzt+. I upgraded the xzt for an edge comp and the tq convertor slips when turned up. I also replaced the rear wheel speed sensor and apps but other than that I woudlnt care to take it accross country in a minute. Actually I drove both cross country several times on a 2400 mile round trip from Phoenix Az to east tx and back. The 03 did it with a 16ft flatbed with a jeep,4wheeler and various other junk and the 98 went with the same trailer with a car on it and 2 dirtbikes and the bed loaded with tools. Good luck with your search.
Most of the evolution of the 5.9 has been to decrease emissions.
The 12 valve's only emission device is the cat that's easy to lose.
The 12 valve is about the last vehicle sold in the US that doesn't have a bunch of pollution crap. Big positive in my book.
12 valves seem to get better fuel mileage, are cheaper to work on and a much more reliable.
Cummins still makes the 12 valve for export, can't say that about the 24 valve.
Heck you can't even buy a new VP pump, only rebuilds. Sort of proves what a disaster they were.

I think the only down fall of a 12 valve verses a 24 is the ability to tune it on the fly my truck is "turned up" til I turn it down this doesnt bother me but it might some people
