More Power Please
Got a mostly stock '96 3/4 4x4 extended cab. Only exceptions that I know of are a 7inch stack and drilled air box. The truck (automatic) shifts at 50 whether I want it to or not and is then completely gutless until 60.I dont plan on doing many mods I just want to work the hell out of it. Im actually gonna remove the stack( sacreligious, I know.) Well the truck dont have just a ton of power leaving red lights either and Im afraid im gonna burn up the tranny cause it works like crazy to get moving or get over 60 when pulling a trailer. Ive read alot about afc's and fuel plates and star wheels on here. What kind of mods can I do at home to at least get it back to stock style power without buying gauges right now? I also would like to get a valve job done which might help. Thanks, and sorry about the extremely long question.

First off, go ahead and do the "free" mods to the AFC. Here are some instructions: Diesel Database :: Turning Up A P7100 Pump Next replace the stock governor springs. This will allow full fueling up to 3000 instead of current defueling at or around 2200. Here is a good set: 3000RPM Governor Spring Kit 94-98 Dodge 5.9L 12 Valve Cummins Diesel 3K GSK Peak Diesel Without gauges you really can't tell how much boost or fuel your pushing, so save your money on pulling head and doing valve job unless you have a problem with a valve right now and spend that money on gauges. It would be a good idea to adjust valves for proper clearance. Here's a link on some fairly inexpensive, but good quality exhaust systems: FARMBOYS DIESEL PERFORMANCE Home Page Have fun.

whoa hang on, you're not gonna get very far with a stock tranny. IMO you're gonna have to at least do a valve body/TC upgrade before you start throwing any power through it, especially since you say that your stocker is hurtin a bit, esp. under load. Doing this will allow you to harness some of the power already being lost through the stock TC. Then you can start doing all of the fun stuff...

Valve adjustment is what I meant to say. Sorry. Shop manual calls for an adjustment every 30000 I believe. Will this effect the performance much if this hasnt been done in a real long time? Also, I dont think the tranny is hurting so much, just afraid it will hurt in the future. Ive been planing on at least a shift kit. Any suggestions?

The mods I listed don't really add any HP overall. They just give you more fuel to start with and more fuel throughout the power band. It makes it use what HP it already has sooner and longer. Unless your tranny is weak already, you should be alright with these unless you really start dogging it from a start every time. I've heard transgo shift kits work, but have no personal knowledge of them.
