47RH, are they junk?

I posted this in the drivetrain section as well. Im getting mine on sunday thats just been rebuilt and has an BD triple lock converter, NO valvebody mods and a 48RE input shaft. I called up a performance trans place on the internet and he pretty much told me that trans will NEVER hold up behind my motor. I know there are alot of you guys making way more power than me running the autos so whats the secret? I dont tow, truck pull, or abuse this truck in any way, but I dont want to be replacing the tranny once a year either! By the way, the place I called sold every billit do-dad you could put into a 47RH but almost refused to sell to me because he said they were pretty much junk. What do you guys think?

no a 47rh can be a very strong trans. But you will need valve body upgrades.

Junk nah maybe in stock for but with a bunch of Goerend parts it will last a while! I did my own and just ordered the stuff from Dave pretty simple tranny in fact the only part I did not do was the Old section and that can be removed separately if needed. I love my 47rh

Sounds like this tranny guy just doesnt know what he is doing. the 47rh is a strong tranny if the builder knows what they are doing. It will hold to your power just fine with the right stuff in it.

billet input
good convertor
good vb

Thats what it takes to hold quite a bit of power. If the clutches are in good shape then they will hold up fine as well.

Having a tuff time getting ahold of the Goerand shop, Im sure he will recomend one of his converters but i cant afford that so Im hopeful that the brand new BD diesel triple lock will be good enough. Im prepared to buy one of his valve bodys if he recomends it, even at $595!!! Ouch!! So maybe with my converter, the new clutches, and one of his valve bodies and with me not abusing it the 47RH will last.

A triple clutch converter should also have a better input shaft. If not it will break a stock one.

If the 47 series trans were junk, why would the fastest duramaxes use it instead of the great allison?

To be honest I wish I had the dough to do the Billet shaft's I think one day I will regret this but they were expensive and still are so unless I can find somthing used then maybe I can justify it....................................Well built 47rh = Awsome!! Hey J-Fox My my shaft's are still stocker's and I am NOT lucky and they are still alive! Knock on wood......Lol.!

Locked up shifts and boosted launches are what kills stock shafts. Your 48re shaft will go a long ways though, as they are a hardened shaft and far better than the stock shaft from the 47 series.

The All of the A618 trannies are weak in stock form, but there are many many mods that can be done and they can be built to be nearly bullet proof.

A good converter and valve body are essential, on top of that, if your bands and clutches are old or worn the should be replaced at the same time as the converter and valvebody.

Sounds like you are in pretty good shape with the converter and clutch packs though.

For your use, there are a couple musts. Like mentioned above, a valvebody. Goerend, DTT, suncoast, HTS, etc... all offer excellent valvebodies. I run a DTT valvebody and am quite happy with it, and they only run about $425. You will also want a billet, Anchor, strut and apply lever for the front band. The tricky part about these, is that the apply lever should be paired to the valvebody manufacturer's specs. Stock is a 3.8:1 ratio, DTT uses 4.4:1, HTS uses 4.2:1, Suncoast runs 5.0:1, Dunrite uses 3.8:1, and I'm not sure about Goerend. I would also recommend running an upgraded front band as well, instead of just a new stock one.

I would also suggest a billet accumulator piston. They run about $50, and have 2 seals on each end Vs. just one. They tend to hold up a lot better to the higher line pressure produced by an aftermarket valvebody. Another common mod on any built tranny is an extra spring in the front clutch spring pack. This requires a specially machined different spring holder and extra spring though.

If you were going to be drag racing the truck, beating on it, or sled pulling it, I would also recommend billet servos, machining to allow for an extra steel and friction in the front clutch pack, and in the front O/D pack as well. And also billet shafts and a laminated or billet flex plate.

All in all, the trannies can be made to be extremely stout. And they are surprisingly straight forward. I built my 47re myself, except for the machining work, and it has been an excellent trans, and has held up to some abuse. I race it, and launch it in 4wd at 30psi boost with no issue.

Thanks Sean and everyone else. How are the BD valve bodies? I figured since it has a BD converter anyways.....

Yeah, BD valvebodies are good. I would just make sure to get the apply lever that they recommend.
