Cutting down 181 DV's

So im getting a set of 181 DV's from a member here and I want to make them 191's or 22's. I have the machine shop at my disposal so how much shoulder do I cut off?

probably a retarded question but if you cut these down yourself, will you still be able to use the stock retainer or holder whatever they call it, im just wondering what the difference is with the ones you get when you buy a set of dv's versus the ones.

Yes and yes. Make sure to cut the bottom edge and keep it as close to 90* as possible.

Factory parts are often made with other differences that may help flow but for the most part the shoulder is what most people worry about.

No the holders are actually a valve and are fine the way they are. If you are talking about the seats, larger would not fit the dv.

What Dvs do you currently have installed? If you have a set of 131's, I personally would cut those and keep the 181's as they are. For 2 reasons. First, what if you make a mistake trying to turn them down. I personally don't think it could be that hard if you have access to a lathe, but what if. Secondly, what if you decide that the 022's or whatever you decide to cut, are too large (Smoke too much, get too hot ect.). At least in that case you could put in the 181's and still be a step ahead of your stock 131's. If I was gonig to cut something, I would cut the cheaper/lower perfomance set. In the end, there is no differance between a cut set of 131's and a cut set of 181's. They will both be 022's after you cut them. The only differance would be the seats, and if yo were that worried about it, you could cut the 131's and install them in the 181 seats. If you decide to go back, just take out the 022's and install the 181. Just my 2 cents.

The 131's actually have a shorter shoulder than the 181's

What I'm saying is that he is going to cut a set of dv's. If he is going to cut them to a certain dimension (Let's just say .022 for the same of argument) what differance does it make what they started out as. I agree that the 131's have a differant seat. People have mixed 181 valves with 131 seats in the past but that is not the point I was trying to get at. I'm saying, why destroy a "High performance" set of 181 delivery valves, when he had cut his stock 131 valves and end up with the same setup in the end.
