You can't retorque the stock head bolts. They are a torque to Yield design. You torque them 66, 89, then turn them 90*. If you are going to do anything replace them with studs.

I think...(ok I won't lie..I know) that Studs and a stock gasket won't hold what I do to my truck. I blew it out between 4 and 5 cylinders.

Will they get you bye for now...yes. Will they last forever? No. I'm hard on headgaskets for some reason...mine made it 3,200 miles before I popped it again. (I'm on #5 now, and I've finally gone to fire rings)

Ahh yes!

When I popped that gasket I wasn't running a ton of timing. Really, for a street truck you don't need a ton of timing either. 17-18 is MORE than enough for street use. You'll run into lag issues as well as starting issues in the cold if you go much higher.

Being I have the tools, in the summer I'd set mine to 17, 15 in the winter. Dyno day, pull or Drag race, 18.5 or so was the sweet spot for mine. But it was laggy on the bottom end on the street.

mine is still where we set it at 15.5* and it seems to be a good spot for the street and its more then likely going to be fast enough for me once i get my htt 64/14 killerb2 on and my tranny in

You can retorque them. We are pushing 55psi through a24V and ran my12 for half of a pulling season at 55psi with 18 degrees timing. We torqued them to 120 ish cold if I remember right. Don't expect this to last forever, just to get you by.
