45 psi with the stock charger might be an issue. Just torque them down. If your only running 40 psi with the killer B I probably wouldn't touch them.

Here is my headgasket with studs. I've got the head bolt I tried to retorque. You tell me they can be retorqued? I don't believe it. When I go to work on tuesday I'll grab it and get you a picture. If your lucky, you've been wrenching long enough like I have and knew something was wrong and stop before it breaks. If not...you get to pull the head and start drilling. And I hope you get it right. Drilling and tapping a block isn't fun. JP |

I have done it on two trucks. This was recommended per haisleys. If you have one that doesn't feel right, not torqueing up right, pull it and replace it.

I don't know what to tell you, other than the fact that the bolts I streached were BRAND NEW...from Cummins. They are a Torque to Yield design, they aren't designed for a retorque. That's just the way they work. I don't trust them. IF you want to try it, go ahead. I'll put studs in before I try that mess again. Burn me once shame on you, burn me twice shame on me. I'll get you a picture of it on Tuesday when I go into work. Wanna see the stud that I streached? I've done that too! |

yeah he has i've seen it , the streched head stud, in person so i'm taking jp's advice and not messing with a retorque not worth the possible migraine. yeah i forgot you streched a head stud josh

Like I said it is just a buy time method. I wouldn't replace a head gasket to do this. But if the truck is together currently and your wanting to go more then go for it. I have done it personally with no issues. Have actually talked to a few guys that were doing this before head studs were even available. Head studs are a better route. Is your torque wrench correct?? Just curious you don't hear of too many stud failures. Trying to look at all options. As far as the head studs not designed for a retorque. They can be retorqued there is a length spec for the stud. If it is longer than that spec it has stretched. Also these engines weren't designed to run 600HP either. LOL Studs are a better option no questions about it. Retorqueing the head is an option though. Call Haisleys and talk to them about it. Last year Terry Coppess was still running the stock head bolts and he as pushing 60PSI thru his motor. Patty told me he checks his head bolts religiously and if one feels soft he just replaces it.

I have retorqued the factory headbolts on 4 trucks, back off the tension and then 125lb/ft. I have yet to have a failure, but as zstroken stated you are just buying your time. These stock retorqued headbolts have held over 20* static timing and as much as 57psi.
